Choi Jin-shil was a famous Actress who was nicknamed The Nation’s Actress. She entered the world of entertainment about 20 years ago, starred in 18 movies, dozens of television series and hundreds of commercials. She was born December 24, 1968 in Seoul, Korea as the first child in a poor family. She dreamed of becoming famous to escape her impoverished situation. Almost immediately after graduating high school in 1987, she started her career as a commercial film model and reached celebrity status when she played a housewife in a Samsung Electronics commercial. Her career soared after the Samsung commercial, and she became a supporting actress in a number of TV dramas. In 1990 she acted in her first movie, North Korean Partisan.
Her personal life was often plagued with hardship. In 1994, her career manager was murdered by her road manager, and she was required to cooperate with authorities as a witness. She married a professional baseball player, Jo Sung-min in 2000, gave birth to a son in 2001 and daughter in 2003. Allegations of domestic violence were confirmed when it was discovered that she was physically assaulted by her husband in 2002 while she was pregnant. On October 2, 2008, Choi Jin-shil committed suicide by hanging herself. There are many rumors surrounding her death, but the true cause is unknown. South Korea suffered a great lost that year as she represented the country’s beloved heroine.
