Shining Inheritance starring Han Hyo Joo and Lee Seung Ki

Shining Inheritance, also known as Brilliant Legacy, is perhaps THE smash hit of 2009 so far. This quintessential Cinderella story pulled in ratings even higher than Boys Over Flowers and crossed the much-desired 40% mark in ratings. Headed by rookie actor Lee Seung Ki, formerly best known as a pop singer, it launched him to instant stardom, while further solidifying female lead Han Hyo Joo (Iljimae, Spring Waltz) as one of Korea's foremost young actresses today. Well-acted, written, and directed, Shining Inheritance is a great example of what can happen when Kdrama conventions are done right.

Go Eun Sung (Han Hyo Joo) has always had an easy life. The daughter of a wealthy, adoring father, she is encouraged to pursue her dreams and goes abroad to study. The only cloud on her horizon is the fact that her much-loved little brother is autistic. But in a single night she loses her entire world.

When her father suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances, the family discovers that his company has crashed and he left behind a huge number of debts. Her stepmother promptly throws her and her brother out of the house in favor of her own daughter, Seung Mi (Moon Chae Won).

Homeless and penniless, Eun Sung takes a job as a waitress at a night club to support herself and her brother, only to have her brother Eun-woo disappear one day. Eun Sung has hit rock bottom. Her fortunes turn, however, when she takes in an amnesiac old woman she finds at the bottom of some stairs after a fall. When the old woman recovers her memory, she turns out to be Jang Sook Ja, the wealthy CEO of a large food company.

Sook Ja takes Eun Sung in and gives her a job at her company, where she clashes constantly with Sun Woo Hwan (Lee Seung Ki), Sook Ja's spoiled grandson (and heir to the company). Eun Sung's sunny disposition and hardworking principles quickly win everyone over, however, and even begin to thaw the heart of selfish Hwan. What Eun Sung doesn't know is that her stepsister Seung Mi and Hwan are childhood friends, and that her evil stepmother is determined to have Seung Mi marry Hwan...

ugh... was really hard to get through the episodes. i didn't feel invested in the story, though i could feel some sympathy for one or two characters, on the whole, this drama was a bit harder to feel catharsis or enjoy.

yikes Talk about your evil step mothers! At ep 14 I felt bad for Seung-Mi more than anything. After 21 eps I am about ready to give it up. Why does it seem that rat punk bastards always end up with the girl in kdrama's?? How stupid.

It's the emotional rollercoaster of DEATH ! When I started to watch this, the one thing I felt for the first several several episodes was being REALLY PISSED OFF! They did a great job with this drama because it lives up to the nature of it's genre- it's SO. Frickin. DRAMATIC. They did a good job making me absolutely despise the step-mother and begin to hate the step-sister. For how awful Hwan was for half of the show, I didn't think there was any possible way he could become likeable- but I was proven wrong. Good job, writers! Even though critically speaking I found this show to be so crazy it was ridiculous, it still hooked me because it was made well enough that I became emotionally invested in it. OMG JOON SAE D: He was perfect from beginning to end!!! I felt so bad for him and all he did for nothing. I really did like the last two episodes because of how everything got wrapped up nicely and it did end up happy after all. I like that the emphasis on Hwan and Eun Sung's relationship wasn't overdone or the main focus of the drama. Overall, well done.

Great acting, great plot, great videography The actors in this drama perform their roles perfectly - you never get a hint that you're watching a drama because the characters are so believable. The plot is so well done, you feel the swells of emotion and the anger you should at the right times. Thankfully, this drama doesn't take you through replays, which are, in my opinion, a cheap waste of time. The videography was done very well, although I get annoyed with all the facetime they give. Just let me see the scene! But other dramas are much worse about this sin than this one - comparatively, this drama keeps it to a minimum.
I wrote that review just before the 20th episode. I HATE Hwan - and I hate the story thereafter! I believe she should have been with Joon-sae, and that made the rest of the show very painful for me!!!
cuteness the characters were likeable, though kind of cliche, they DID do react differently in many situations than i imagined, which is pretty nice. there was so much drama in every episode which kept me watching it..of course the drama is fixed up little by little which didnt become a burden and shove me away from the drama. I liked the couple and the characters really develop throughout the whole story. the endng could be better, like always XD

awful, shame on ALL the staffs of this kdrama He learned his lesson that all that matters but this korean writer mutherfucker didn't. Go Eun Sung said" Afican-Americains are scary" What's scary about them? Do the koreans know Africain-Americans well? How dare you write that in your scripts spreading racism and prejudice Usher is working with G-Dragon we all humans Make the world a better place assholes for the Blacks Whites Reds and Yellow people For all the mutherfuckers who gave this a 4 or 5 stars SHAME ON YOU ALL I can see and understand how Hitler started his hatred for another race because of people like you all who gave 4 and 5 stars for racist comment************************Teaching opportunity my ass RESPECT for ALL the races... Do you have parents?? Where did the koreans learned " Blacks are scary?" From you All defend the racist comment make it right for the racists pigs who else is related to Hitler here? more thumbs down the more I like it You can't handle the truth...hahahahaha love u 2*** keep it coming

Loved It I really like this drama. I wished Kim Me Sook would have gotten it a little more in the end. I also did not feel sorry for Moon Chae Won once she discovered what her mom was doing. Although she was in love, she should have thought about how Hang Hy Jo and her father had treated her for the past 7 years which is almost the same amount of time she was with Lee Seung Gi.

Why do fools fall in love? I really enjoyed this K drama more than I thought I would. I liked the main female lead and Bae Soon Bin a lot. They really helped keep my interest throughout the entire series. I felt bad for Bae Soon Bin's character. In my opinion he was way better boyfriend material than the lead male character. Not to mention his looks were WOAH!! And talk about evil stepmother material, now that was intense! I am glad I don't have a mother like that. *^_^*

My Rating: Worthwhile but failed to maintain focus First of all, I just want to say that it took me awhile to finally decided to watch this Kdrama afraid that it will fall into the same category as BOF. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this Kdrama but dreaded the dragging 2nd half. It included all the qualities of becoming a great family Kdrama, but unfortunately failed to maintain its heart & soul with its neglection of Eun Sung & Eun Woo's relationship and predictable 2nd half. In fact, I slowly realized the lack of chemistry between Lee Seung Gi & Han Hyo Joo, too. I did love Seung Mi played by Moon Chae Won though! She portrayed her character real well as the likeable, yet, misunderstood sister with an evil (step)mother. I enjoyed her in 'Painter of the Wind', too, and now after 'Shining Inheritance', I think she's ready to play the lead character by now! My rating - Amazing 1st half and may be worthy of your time but failed to maintain its focus in the 2nd half with its predictability and unnecessary episode extension!
