Sandglass starring Choi Min Soo, Park Sang Won and Ko Hyung Jung
Sandglass became an instant classic and cultural phenomenon when it aired in 1995. Created by the same producer and writer behind Eyes of Dawn, often considered the first modern Korean drama. Charting a politically tumultuous period in Korean history (late 1960s to 1980s), Sandglass tell the tale of Tae Soo (Choi Min Soo) and Woo Suk (Park Sang Won), best friends despite their wildly different paths in life.
After Tae Soo's father's past is revealed, he is rejected from military school and ends up fiercely loyal to the mob, while Woo Suk follows his path to righteous and commits his life to social justice. Despite many odds, the two keep their friendship in tact, until Woo Suk falls in love with Hye Rin (Ko Hyung Jung), who falls for Tae Soo instead.
While the trio struggles in with their complicated situation, all three are affected by political upheaval, as rebellion shakes their world. Delving into an event and time period that had been taboo up until this point, Sandglass gave voice to many Koreans who had suffered through the events of the 80s and early 90s, and opened the door for other projects to address this time period, such as The Petal (1996) and Peppermint Candy (2000). Romantic, historically relevant, and sophisticated, Sandglass is a masterful work of storytelling that set the standard today's dramas still aspire to reach.
A unique and disquieting window on the struggle for power on a macroeconomic level (students' pro democracy; gov corruption) to the micro level (Tae Soo struggle to gain power). A mesmerizing tale of corruption and illegal activity that is still bold and timely. Loyalty, betrayal, friendship, unrequited love, political corruption, organized crime, and duty.
Did things happen only at night? I have watched upto episode 6. All scenes were too dark to make out images. I could not even bad guys from good. I am giving up after Epi 6.
I think I may have to throw in the towel on these Korean dramas. There was absolutely no justifcation for this horrible ending. So you sentence a guy for murder who was attacked by someone wielding a knife? You have got to be kidding me. This would have gotten five stars from me if Tae Soo would have been allowed to live. I just couldn't stomach the ending.
Starts really slow and picks up toward the end. I really hated the ending, but it was necessary to show the corruption in the government and the difference in the sacrifice people make for their country. I don't think Tae Soo Park was such a bad guy, he took care of the people under him, and his loyal people loved and respected him enough to do anything he needed.
