Shin Don starring Son Chang Min, Jong Bo Suk, Seo Ji Hye, and Kim Hye Re
Based on a true story, Shin Don covers the life of Buddhist monk Shin Don (Son Chang Min), who took lead Korea during one of its most troubled times and became a powerful and revolutionary leader. Directed by Kim Jin Min (La Dolce Vita,Time Between Dog and Wolf), Shin Don is a superb historical epic which ably captures the life of an extraordinary individual.
Shin Don, a Buddhist priest and the son of a princess and a slave, has become a rising political power whom both the King and Queen depend on for advice. This drama strives to give a face and personality to this famous figure, drawing him as both a skilled manipulator of political events for his own advantage and a driven revolutionary dedicated to bettering society.
An epic tale of love, betrayal, and political turmoil, Shin Don captures the rise and fall of one of Korea's most disputed historical figures.
I managed to watch the whole thing out of historical interest, but it was slow to catch my interest until Princess Noguk appeared, and when she died, it took a turn for the worse. My interest declined to the point where I took a break to watch My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox, Dream High, and some American programs before returning to it. It was certainly interesting to see what role Shin Don played in shaping the future Joseon dynasty, but since this was about the decline of a nation (Goryeo) instead of the rise of one, it was more sad than heroic. It's worth watching out of historical interest, and it has its moments, but it is by no means the most entertaining historical drama I've seen. For a much more inspiring drama with the same actress as the queen, I recommend Kim Soo Ro.
So far this historical drama is OK...If you expecting something as admirable or commendable as Chuno The Slave Hunters or Emperor of the sea or Jumong or The Kingdom of The Winds, then this drama isn't for you...There no ninja fighting all over the place..Just a lot of corrupt people (Politician) and lots and lots of backstabbing and lots of fake laugh "ha ha ha " awwww ..I keep waiting for a laugh track..Seriously!!! and my final note here ..Lee Dae Yun as
Ki Chul awwww what up with his mouth..What an ugly mouth that man has and the sound that he make errrrr
I love DramaFever and have never before given anything I've seen a negative review. I enjoyed most of SHIN DON, but I'm sorry I watched Episodes 60 and 61. The ending of this drama was so gruesome it negated all that went before. If you decide to watch this, enjoy the first 59 episodes, but forget about the end.
I give this drama an overall 4-5 star, but the man playing Lord Doekseong is TERRIBLE!! Can't want till he is no longer in the drama...such BAD BAD acting. Really,,,,was the director happy with this guy?
And the Queen Mother...ugh...what a bother...
Actor Man Suk has come a long way. He got talents. Love his acting, close ups and personality. He is capable of portraying various emotions and frustrations through non-verbal expressions. He was in King & I (Wang Kwa Na) and other co-starring roles including Shin Don, and now Warrior Baek Dong Soo. Correction: Shin Don is a monk, the son of a noble (yanban) and slave, not a princess and a slave.
Story of the man who founded a kingdom that ruled over Korea and a large swath of what is now China. Jumong was the highest-rated Korean drama in 2006.
A stunning historical epic chronicling the life of one of Korea's greatest rulers, Yi San was the most watched drama over the length of its entire 77 episodes.
