Eight Days Mystery of Jeongjo Assassination

Adapted from a novel, Eight Days Mystery of Jeongjo Assassination is a high-budget, 10-episode epic that weaves a rich narrative fabric around the life of a fascinating historical figure. Focusing on 18th-century ruler King Jeongjo, this drama centers on a dangerious journey to his father's tomb during a tension-fraught period in the middle of his reign.

Strong-willed, brilliant ruler Jeongjo (Kim Sang Joon) came to the throne at a time when Joseon politics was dominated by the power-hungry Byeokpa party and the court was rife with corruption. Instituting governmental reforms and turning things around, Jeongjo quickly earned the hatred of many men in power. History reports that at one of the most tense points of his reign, Jeongjo decided to travel to his father's tomb in defiance of the threat of assassination from political enemies. The annals say that the journey lasted eight days, but no information remains on what happened during that journey. Eight Days Mystery vividly depicts the possibility that his rivals may have decided that the journey was a perfect opportunity for an "accident" to happen to Joseon's beloved ruler...

I was hooked on this immediately. Story was engrossing. Read a little about these kings on Wiki, not hard to follow back story or understand the situation in court. While I loved the story, the subbing could be better. Every time I read that someone will have to "bear the grunt" I giggle a little. I've seen this in other dramas too. Obviously it means "bear the brunt" and something has been lost in translation, but it is still humorous to read on the screen. However, as I enjoy Korean drama, but do not understand the language, I do appreciate the time and effort that the subbing crews put into these dramas.

even after reading the "real story" on the internet, this drama is difficult to follow. second time i try... i think i'll watch it again when my korean will be better because there's a lot of things i didn't get. writers... thumbs down... it can't be a win each time! i give the average passing mark 2 stars 1/2...

What the fuck is going on? I have seen all of YI SAN's episodes, which I can kind of understand the core characters. I wonder what would anyone understand from this if they hadn't seen YI SAN either

I watch a lot of Korean Dramas and usually have no trouble with Subtitles on Dramafever. The subtitles in this series however are not good at all. I think I am going to give up after watching only part of episode one. It's not that you can't make them out to some degree but just to troublesome to make it worth watching. I might give it another try at a different time

I actually appreciate when the folks that do the subtitles stay away from English slang, etc in historical dramas. However, I'm pretty sure Shakespeare did not live in Korea. I think court language could have been represented without going so far over the top. As it is, I simply couldn't wade through it all to finish the drama. I stopped after the first episode.

brief history. king yeongjo (dong yi's son) and crown prince sado have a terrible relationship. according to history books and what i have read, Crown Prince Sado was mentally ill due from high fever when he was a child, but many dramas i have seen portraying him do not show that such as Yi San and Warrior Baek Dong Soo. he is also very scared of his father and in his presence usually mutters and stammers over his words. reports were made to King Yeongjo that Sado was a sex deviant and engaged himself in relations with the palace maids and shrine maidens. he was also said to have murdered many people when he became mentally unstable. Sado and his son, Yi San, had a good relationship despite all this. he loved his son and was always complimenting and favoring him. a totally different relationship than that between Sado and Yeongjo. it also is said that he had tried multiple times to rape one of his sisters....

I agree with the last review to watch Yi San before this drama so it can be more palatable and enjoyable. Otherwise, it is well dramatically crafted and the actors portrayed the characters well to the storyline. Very good.

I recommend that you watch Yi San first. That way you will understand the first two episodes of this series. However, this series was not meant to explain a complete history. It is really not necessary after about the 3rd episode. Very good. Very complex story that comes together at the end.
