The Kingdom of the Wind Starring Song Il Kuk and Choi Jung Won

The Kingdom of the Wind is a big budget historical thriller that captivated audiences and won multiple KBS drama awards in 2008. This is a no nonsense epic (especially when compared to Strongest Chil Woo) featuring beautiful cinematography and score as well as lots of grand battle scenes, conspiracies, political intrigue, and assassination plots.

The Kingdom of the Wind is a story about Muhyul, and the third king of Koguryeo who was also called the god of wars. Muhyul is the grandson of Jumong but was born with a supposed curse to kill his parents, siblings, son, and destroy the country. His father, King Yuri, was horrified by this prophecy but couldn’t get himself to kill his own child. So he orders his elder son, Haemyung, to take baby Muhyul outside the palace to live as a commoner who doesn’t know anything about his true identity. Through the course of 36 episodes, Muhyul goes through many trials and tribulations to defy his nefarious fate, and eventually emerges as a powerful king.

The Kingdom of the Wind is well acted and directed, and stars Song Il Kuk in the lead role of Muhyul. Incidentally, Song also played the main role in Jumong where he was Muhyul’s grandfather. Enjoy!

SIG Persona I think there is something in Song Il Gook's persona that makes him so ideal in portraying historical larger than life characters. From his excellent acting in Jumong and Emperor of the Sea, he is able to bring to life such awesome characters to life to get a better appreciation of these people who shaped history.

I viewed it a second time! After reading some of the reviews, I thought I'd go back and re-watch the whole drama series. The criticism about the subtitles being too archaic and mismatched is what intrigued me. I don't have a strong enough foundation in hangul to be able to discern if the subtitles are inappropriately translated. However, it did seem a bit Shakespeare, but why would we expect anything different? It's a historical drama! English (United Kingdom) historical dramas are not mainstream American English. Perhaps that is what is at issue for some people. On the whole, this is a good historical series, especially if you are looking for entertainment.

Awsome! One of the best Kdrama I have sean. The subtitles are so authentic and precise. The story is good from end to finish and they must have spent alot of cash for the realistic equipment.

I love Song Il Gook But his acting is wooden. Just compare it to the other actors along side him who are doing a better job. Don't get me wrong I adore him

commendable! Gosh, the subtitles did really try to match the era of the drama - so archaic and obsolete. Moving on ... What really struck me was Song Il Gook's subtle display of emotions. What others would consider wooden, I find that the downplay of expression in most scenes only adds mystery to his role. Once in a while you catch a glimpse of a nuance so fleeting and refined. Blink and you'll miss it altogether. All the same, putting together an interesting story of an obscure era in Korean history takes a lot of creativity. Making it into a film series worth watching is even more amazing. This is one of them. Well done!

Not bad for a sequel This is a sequel to the original Jumong. Overall, it was a pretty good show. The bad part is that Jumong's grandson is played by the same guy Jumong himself in the original. I never lliked his lukewarm performance in the original. Same here too. Kind of awkward. It reminded me of the original. I could not get over that hump. His antagonist Dojin suffers from a bad-hair day. Half way through the drama, he wears ugly hair covering half of his face. Awg! The makeup guys must have been brain dead. His acting skill is as bad as Jumong. The lady general alway had a single-note emotionless voice. She was literally reading lines instead of talking with passion. Other than that, the storyline was pretty good and the script was acceptable. The flow of secene was smooth. Jumong in heaven was probably smiling that his grandson finally achieved his life-long dream of subjugating Buyo. It is not as breath-taking as the original but I must admit that I enjoyed.
