Hong Gil Dong starring Kang Ji Hwan and Sung Yuri

One of the Hong Sisters’ most beloved dramas, Hong Gil Dong is a rousing and bittersweet story about a hero who rises to protect the people.

Born the illegitimate son of a high-ranking government official, Hong Gil Dong, was cast off by his father as a child and raised by a monk. Hong Gil Dong grows up a streetwise, smart-mouthed thief with a specialty in martial arts. His world gradually begins to collapse around him due to poverty, and gradually the fun-loving vagabond changes into something else. Determined to throw a wrench in the system, he sets out taking down and stealing from the wealthy and arrogant wherever he can find them. Along the way he picks up a ragtag band of helpers including the stubborn, kind-hearted wanderer Yi Nok (Sung Yuri). Amidst fighting for justice and falling in love, Gil Dong is also wrangled into imperial politics when the exiled rightful heir to Korea's throne (Jang Geun Seuk) returns and plots to overthrow the corrupt government. Ultimately, this renegade thief will be responsible for choices that will shape a nation.

I loved it .. the story, the characters. Cried buckets in the end then thought, wait a minute .... went back and rewatched the beginning of the first episode where they're showing Hong Gil Dong and his merry gang robbing a banquet and realized the beginning of the drama was actually the end ... my tears stopped and I was a happy camper. Sort of felt sorry for Sukkie but she really was a much better match for Hong Gil Dong. I watched this over 2 years ago and it's in my queue to watch again.

This started out a little unusual and funny, then got really interesting, the actors, as with most of these dramas, did their jobs well; however, the drama ended up leaving this viewer feeling it was all a waste. The mixture of modern and historical did not have enough fluidity to be appreciated. If one is looking for a something that makes overall sense, this is not recommended.

I'm ashamed to admit I'm barely 1/3 the way through with this, but is there any real reason why I should continue to watch? I get into the drama and plot, then turned off by the senseless and inane acting. Part of me thinks it's funny and unique, the other half: just stupid. I like Gil Dong's character, but can't stand anyone else.. this may just be a lost cause.

I loved every minute of this drama. It was very well acted by everyone, but I am a sucker for JKS. I am torn on wether or not I like the ending. I do appreciate realistic endings over fairytale ones, but this one was almost too real for me. I cried...a lot.
