Attic Cat starring Kim Rae Won and Jung Da Bin

Attic Cat is an unconventional, endearing romantic comedy from the writer of Full House, one of the most famous Korean dramas of all time. Attic Cat was very popular when it aired, achieving 37% ratings at its peak in Korea.

Law student Lee Kyung Min (Kim Rae Won) is used to getting what he wants: raised by indulgent grandparents after his parents died, he spends his days chasing girls and enjoying the finer things of life. Spoiled and selfish, there's only one person he really loves - Na Hye Ryun, a fellow student from a wealthy family. But unbeknownst to Kyung Min, Hye Ryun is already in love with a family friend from a similarly wealthy background, Yoo Dong Joon.

When Hye Ryun ignores his initial advances, Kyung Min befriends Nam Jung Eun (Jung Da Bin), her friend, to get close to her, a poor, not-overly-academic policeman's daughter whose simple dream is to have an apartment of her own. Having failed employment exams repeatedly, Jung Eun has been reduced to selling newspapers to get enough money to rent an apartment. But when her family decides to move out of town and her younger brother steals the money she'd saved up to rent the attic room of an old building, Jung Eun is left with no options. Kyung Min, seeing his opportunity, jumps in to play the role of gallant rescuer, lending her the money and helping her move in, hoping to impress Hye Ryun. But Hye Ryun and Jung Eun are not, in fact, particularly good friends, and Hye Ryun continues to refuse his advances. Jung Eun in the meantime, initially falling for him because of his kindness, is furious when she finds out he's been pursuing her to just get to her friend. When loan sharks begin hounding Kyung Min and his grandparents refuse to subsidize him anymore, Kyung Min decides that it's time to call in Jung Eun's debt to him, and Jung Eun is too kind-hearted to refuse him when he demands that she let him live with her in her attic. What will happen when a selfish, demanding young lawyer and a self-sacrificing but stubborn young woman live together?

Attic Cat has all the attention to detail and light, warm-hearted touches that made Full House such a big hit. Kim Yu Ri, author of the original story and of Full House, excels at portraying ordinary people and making their lives both identifiable and compelling, and this endearing story of two people forced to live together by circumstance and then drawn together by their hearts is sure to please everyone.

I'm surprised by the many poor reviews, but I actually enjoyed this drama, many of the scenes made me laugh out loud especially the ones when Kyung Min would get jealous of Jung Eun/Chief. I thought the acting by the lead actor & actress was great. I first saw Jeong Da Bin in the movie He Was Cool and I thought she did an excellent job, I wish I could see more of her films but unfortunately she left this world too early.

I decided to watch this drama because I had heard some good reviews. Big mistake! The main leads have no chemistry, and their interactions are nothing but annoying. Don't get me wrong, I love me some bickering couple working their way to love, but this series takes the bickering and fighting to the extend that the relationship screams unhealthy. And the main lead actress.. ughhh couldn't stand her in this series. so shrill, irrational, weak and annoying.

I don't think I can continue this drama. The lead female is too much of a pushover. I've seen weak women, but this is really too much. I think it will only get worse as this drama progresses. I'll try to hang in there, but no promises. UPDATE I did finish this drama. I could have skipped this one. I'm just not attracted to habitually weak women characters, it just infuriates me! I could not see how she came to be so gaga over this guy who only used her. Moreover his character, though rich, leeched off a poor hard-working person. Not a good look. It seems like the writers took a formula from the drama catalog w/out adequately developing their characters & adding some flavor, which in the end is the only thing that separates one drama from the next.

I wanted to like this drama because I like the cohab-situation in which the actors are placed, but it didn't quite do it for me. Although this drama had it's funny, sweet, intense and romantic moments, it didn't stand out like other Kdramas of the same genre. Other dramas that did this romance/living situation plot better: Personal Taste, 9 End 2 Outs, Shining Inheritance, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and Smile, You.
