Jejoongwon starring Park Yong Woo, Han Hye Jin, and Yeon Jung Hoon

Set in a pivotal period of Korean history, the drama traces the rise of three medical students as they struggle to overcome adversity and become physicians in Korea's first modern hospital. Based around the historical Jejoongwon hospital established in 1885, Jejoongwon is a gripping, well-written drama which pulled in successful ratings .

As an ordinary butcher, Hwang Jung (Park Yong Woo) is far from being a surgeon. But when his mother dies without the proper medical care she needed, he is driven by guilt and becomes determined to become a doctor. As a medical student, he meets Seok Ran (Han Hye Jin) who dreams of becoming a doctor at a time when female doctors didn't exist. Studying with them is Baek Do Yang (Yeon Jung Hoon), a nobleman who has left his aristocratic life to enter the medical field. With large-scale unrest in Korea, Jejoongwon becomes the first Korean school to teach Western medicine. At a time when the traditional and modern are colliding, these three must overcome all obstacles to reach their dreams.

I feel like I owe to American missionaries who dedicate and sacrifice their life for the unconditional love. This drama made me think about rest of my life. I think there are many different way to demonstrate of historical drama. I appreciate to director that he made film like Jejoongwon. Great job!! The Sebrans hospital is the one of best hospital today in South Korea. With best 10 stars, I would recommend Jejoongwon. Never regret.

Fine dramatization of last years of the Joseon dynasty, Korean caste system, Japanese scheme to colonize Korea, patriotic resistance to it and contributions of American (medical) missionaries to modernization of Korea.

I got to say that I really enjoyed this historical drama. All the characters were wonderful to get to know and the way the played the emotions across the screen was beautifully done, it's like you can actually feel their hate, love and pain. This drama you should take the time to watch and enjoy.

This series was hard to watch in places, due to the harshness of some of the events and people in the story, but it was compelling, and got me interested in Korean history, which led me to do some reading and research. (One of my uncles and a fellow writer were Korean War veterans, and a colleague was stationed in South Korea several years ago, so that added to my interest, as well.) There is a greater passage of time than the series indicates, but many of the characters were real people, and the actual history of that period is even more tangled and intense than the story reveals. But that's part of the storyteller's dilemma: what to focus on, and what to leave out. All in all, an excellent show. I first viewed it several months ago, and it's in my queue to watch again.

Historical drama. Well developed characters. The west meets Asia. The caste system disregards abilities. Societal practices examined. Abuse of authority. Compassion. This love story of romance and medicine shows the lust of politics and also success overcoming obstacles. Jejoongwon features wickedness, violence, and inhumanity along with tender love, making people question long held beliefs. Hwang Jung (actor Park Yong Woo) keeps agonizing secrets to follow his heart. People of various nationalities are shown favorably or negatively. Jung and Yoo Seok Ran (actress Han Hye Jin) have good chemistry. Jung's eyes hunger with longing and passion for Seok Ran. Love oozes through his body with pleading eyes, a strong yet innocent bearing, his humility, his weaknesses and strengths, his ability to forgive, his loyalty, his bashfulness. Finally, lacking info to explain a five year span of Jung and Seok Ran's lives, the ending was too abrupt. Still, both their self-sacrificing spirits remain unstoppable.

The contrasts between the economic groups of Korean peoples is really interesting to learn about. The prohibitions leveed on groups of peoples who do work that is considered ‘grunt’ work in this time frame and to what extent they had to go in order to escape and realize a life with education is amazing. Lovely storyline, very well acted and so interesting to learn about this facet of Korean history.
