Harvest Villa starring Shin Ha Kyun and Lee Bo Young

Film actor Shin Ha Kyun (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) and much-loved Lee Bo Young (Birth of a Rich Man, ATHENA) headline this comedy about a man who stumbles into love and a murder mystery at the same time. A delightful, under-looked little gem, Harvest Villa blends bright comedy with some of the darker elements of a thriller. Not to be missed.

When the owner of a shabby villa in a run-down part of Seoul mysteriously dies, it sets in motion a chain of events that touches many lives. His son Bok Gyu (Shin Ha Kyun), a struggling actor, arrives to take possession of the villa, only to find that rumors are swirling everywhere that his father has left a huge inheritance in gold hidden somewhere in the villa - and that his father was murdered. As Bok Gyu navigates his way through the web of mystery around his father's death, he encounters intrusive neighbors, oddball residents, and a beautiful girl - all who may have their eyes set on his money. When he meets orphaned, lovely Seo Rin (Lee Bo Young), he knows that she's the girl of his dreams - but can he trust her?

All parts mesh in this fun and different drama. Lee Bo Yong is beautiful, yes, but also effective in this role, and agree with others that I hope to see more of Shin Ha Kyun. You can tell from the publicity photo at start that he is being marketed as kind of a goof but truly, he is a terrific actor who really should be in more dramas. Anything else Drama Fever has with him in it, I will watch. Check this one out, different, well done, and fun.

Lee Bo Young plays a complex character showing more than her usual heroine, romantic lead. Yes, she has a dark side; she plays a con on her unsuspecting victim, Shin Ha Kyun. This is not a spoiler as it will be clear from the get-go (the cockroach incident and the bathroom brawl where she is displaying her fighting skills, in ep. 2, are just few examples of the numerous tell-tale signs of her duplicity, and they are all ridiculously funny). He went gaga for her after their first encounter, and who wouldn't with LBY. She just looks gorgeous in everything that she wears. All the actors played their roles to perfection; they seem to be completely engrossed in their characters. Direction of actors, editing, sound, and production all around, are almost flawless. This is a prime example of the quality that K-dramas have produced lately. When it comes to execution and filmmaking, this show is at the top, together with Chuno, Runaway Plan B, Kingdom of the Wind, and How to Meet A Perfect Neighbor.

Harvest Villa is one of my very favorite k-dramas. It has a quirky, subtle and ironic sense of humor throughout. I often find myself laughing out loud at the twists the plot takes. I am currently watching it for a second time and see many subtle jokes that I missed the first time (like all the tape stuck on the back of the door in the "interrogation room"). It isn't sappy like so many k-dramas and there is very little crying and hysterics - just some imperfect people discovering what love and commitment mean in an entertaining and humorous way. This drama is a terrific mix of comedy, sadness, redemption and mystery. Again, one of my rare 5-STARS reviews.

this drama delivers a very different taste compared to other dramas. it's comedic with a slightly offbeat humour but still it keeps its thriller/mystery characteristic. great cast and Shin Ha Kyun is an excellent actor. nice storyline and the gregorian chants and jewish music give a really different atmosphere. at times it makes me think a bit of Pulp Fiction, it has this Tarentino flavor... i like it very much! 4 and 1/2 stars :D

Harvest Villa has easily taken over the #2 spot for best K-drama I've seen from My Lovely Kim Sam Soon (still my sentimental #1). The wife/husband writer/director team who is behind HV is proving themselves to above average. They're also behind Sign, my #1, another uncommon mystery thriller. For those that just have to have romance in everything *sigh* HV has a fair dose of that..maybe. ;) HV is twisty, quirky, exciting, romantic, funny, and, yes, a little sad at time. Unlike most K-dramas there's not an overuse of flashbacks or music. A definite must see.

This is my first time seeing Shin Ha Kyun in a drama. I've seen him mostly in movies which usually have dark humour, as does Harvest Villa. Very funny in the earlier episodes and toward the end it gets pretty serious and gripping! I would have preferred a more detailed ending but generally this drama is really good and I recommend it for anyone looking for a dark comedy.

Great ride. Lots of fun, laughs, Killings, dead people dropping all over, bad guys, 50 million, or was it 500 million, or 50 billion, worth of GOLD. Still don't know, translation was off on the dollar figure. No one happy except the killer with the nice place. Great!
