Secret Investigation Record starring Kim Ji Hoon and Im Jung Eun

Tightly plotted, critically acclaimed Secret Investigation Records blends sci-fi chills and historical thrills in this fantastic story. Kim Ji-Hoon, Stars Falling from the Sky, stars as a government investigator in 17th century Korea. Im Jung Eun (Swallow the Sun) and much-loved Kim Gab Soo (Cinderella's Sister) co-star. Based on real cases from Korean history, this X-files esque drama pulled in high ratings for its genre.

Kim Hyung Do (Kim Ji Hoon), originally an ordinary inspector for the government, rises in the ranks due to his undying passion for his trade. Chosen for a secret organization which investigates unexplained phenomena, he soon stumbles across a series of mysterious, supernatural events, and sets out to discover the truth behind them. In his quest he is helped (and sometimes hindered) by Heo Yoon Yi (Im Jung Eun), whose enthusiastic belief in the supernatural stands in stark contrast to his own cool-headed logic (making them the Mulder and Scully of the k-drama world). Wonderfully filmed and suspenseful, this drama skillfully weaves together mystery, drama, and a little romance in a concoction of science fiction and historical intrigue.

Yes, Secret Investigation Record has the X-Files vibe to it, but has any paranormal research type non-reality show that has come on tv since. Aside from the pipe smoking man a la the cigarette smoking man, I would say SIR is more like Fringe. The only Scully type character becomes a believer quickly. I liked that. I did find the first 4 episodes fairly boring and draggy, but they seemed to get better. They stories are off beat but I liked them as they give some insight into Korean folklore of which I know nothing about. The investigations range from alien to zombie with a few things in between. Though I agree the writing could have been better. The production of the show lacked. They tried too much creativity with the camera work including shakey cam. The lighting wasn't great and the sound to me could have also used some TLC. The acting was good, especially that of the 3 leads. So, SIR is ify. If you like supernat, go for it. If you're not that keen on the subject, pass.

The first 2 episodes were... not so good. I gave this show a fair chance and saw the whole thing. But as some reviewers previously mentioned the show is too X-Files-y and the cases are... ridiculous. There is even the cigar smoking man (in this case a pipe smoking man) just like in the X-Files. The only difference is that there are 3 people solving the cases together. The other thing that annoyed me is that all of the episodes take place in the dark (nightfall). So it is a bit dull. The entire thing... slightly... improved in episodes towards the end. But the end was a bit of a mystery. (Just like in the X-Files.) Everyone has their own taste in k-drama and if you would like to give this show a chance go ahead.

Only downside... I really wanted to find out who she was... if they explained it... it went over my head.

This drama is excellent! Far from the regular K-drama setting, this show is x-files based in old Korea. There is the supernatural, UFOs, government conspiracy and of course, love. The plot is really good and many of the episodes have an underlying theme. "Does the government hide the truth from the people and would do so despite all costs? I really do like the camera work and cinematography. There is a sense of the eerie surroundings and really draws in the viewer's attention. Highly recommend it!

A for effort. C for execution. The end could have been put together better. Would have liked to see 16 episodes. The stories were well written. A better camera crew and director would have been much much better. Would give it 3.5 *s if I could.

this is a good series but very different from what i've watched so far... different way of filming. some framing and angles are a bit disturbing... i very much like the tones and lightening though... good make up. the story is interesting but i'm a little lost. i think i'll have to watch it a second time to fully grasp it...

Up to #10, They have some good storylines going. 7 an 8 were a bit disjointed till the end and then you saw the connection. Hope they explain who the woman is and where she came from. Finally finished series, Not really happy with the end but what can you do?
