If you like movies that cross cultures (although this a bit less so than many, since the children and even the parents have pretty much assimilated) and deal with intergenerational themes, this is a good movie for you. The ending is a bit happier than most real life endings, and the crises do not leap across the screen and rend your heart, but sometimes that's a good thing. I probably would have given it 4.5, but didn't have that option.

It is the eternal fight about if we do belong or not, who we are and what is love. Also about identity, whether if we are Americans or from somewhere else, from where our parents come from... but the truth is that you are American when you love America, enjoy being American, hope for work and live in America, desire to belong and fight for it with your hard work and/or raising a family, although you have an accent or your eyelids are beautifully Asian or your skin is ivory or ebony...This movie is about identity, family and ultimately LOVE...is excellent...Thank you

I'm reminded why I don't watch alot of Asian-American cinema. It's always inevitably about a journey of assimilation. Sad. I can see why the father wants to commit suicide.
