Soopum Sohn's thriller, Make Yourself at Home, brings Hallyu superstar Song Hye-Kyo to American audiences alongside Rob Yang, Athena Curray, and Amo Frisch.
Newlyweds Peter Kim (Rob Yang) and his Korean wife Sookhy (Song Hye-Kyo) move into Peter's mother's home in suburban New Jersey after an arranged marriage set up through a broker in Korea. The mysterious Sookhy sees moving to the States as a way to escape from her troubled past. Korean American Peter immediately faces communication issues with Sookhy, leading to tensions that are exacerbated by the open suspicions of Peter's mother regarding Sookhy’s background. When Peter and Sookhy befriend John (Amo Frisch) and Julie (Athena Curray), the Caucasian couple living next door, Sookhy gains an opportunity to become acculturated. As the neighbors grow closer, Sookhy becomes more and more obsessed with the lives of her neighbors, going so far as to rename herself "Julie". However, when Peter suddenly meets his untimely demise, Sookhy's obsession reaches the brink of sanity.
This was one odd, wackadoodle film filled with huge plot holes and
questionable acting. When this was originally released it totally earned the
dunning reviews it truly deserved.
The "plot" involved a match-maker made shaman-bride, American-Korean husband (who
was a total Mama's boy), the Mama and a pair of weird, next door neighbors with their own baby-making problems. The only acting talent (other than SHK) was the dog - and he tried to run away. Smart dog.
This was hyped as a noir-type thriller/horror. Forget it. The only real horror was the
sad fact that SHK agreed to be part of this turkey. If you need a "fix" of SHK, then watch "Hotelier" or "Full House" here on DramaFever - she shines in those two dramas.
This is the worst movie that I've seen in years. Yes, years. The story is confusing, there's no "building up" of why they do what they do, or why they say the things they say. You have to guess what's going on, throughout the whole movie. The acting is very non-professional, as if it's their first play in middle school. I think the only reason Korean actress "Song Hye-Kyo" said yes to doing this, was because in So. Korea, doing anything "American" is the ultimate goal, and I know this, because I'm Korean. Out of all the excellent, fantastic, awesome American movies made, it's too bad that Song Hye-Kyo's acting abilities had to be wasted on this piece of crap. She was outstanding in the So. Korean drama "Autumn In My Heart". This movie is just plain stupid. And to make matters worse, I had to keep stopping and starting it, because the "sound" didn't work during some parts of it. IF YOU LIKE WATCHING TERRIBLE MOVIES THAT STINK, YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE.
this is one of the freakiest movie that i've seen in a while. this is so slow, acting is amateurish, script sucks and none of this makes any sense. what a waste of Song Hyekyo...! she's been in plenty of good full feature movies as well as dramas. this one - just forget about it... never happened.
