Tree With Deep Roots starring Han Suk Gyu, Jang Hyuk, and Shin Se Kyung

A high-budget historical thriller with an unusual concept, Tree with Deep Roots stars Jang Hyuk (Chuno, Thank You) as a brilliant Joseon-era investigator. Based on a bestselling novel by Lee Jeong-myeong, Tree With Deep Roots is a tense, finely-crafted series, laced with mystery and romance. Han Suk Gyu and Shin Se-kyung (High Kick through the Roof, Queen Seon Duk) co-star.

Kang Chae-Yoon (Jang Hyuk) is an ordinary guard in the imperial palace during the reign of King Sejong (Han Suk Gyu). The King has a vision to create a written language for Korea, and has worked with scholars to create the first Korean alphabet. In this project he is helped by So-yi, a beautiful, mute lady of the court (Shin Se-kyung). When palace scholars begin getting murdered seven days before the release of the official hangul (alphabet), Chae-Yoon takes it upon himself to investigate. In his investigation, he begins to uncover a vast, labyrinthine conspiracy behind the serial killings being carried out by a group of shadowy, powerful men who seek control of Korea's fate. As Chae-Yoon comes closer to the truth, he discovers how far the roots of their powers extend, and finds his own life in danger, while at the same time deal with the politics of love and work in his personal life.

This brilliant historical adaptation of Korea's most revered Monarch, whose picture is emblazoned on South Korea's 10,000 won note, who laid the foundation for what is now Korea's writtten language based on the Hangul system made for an intelligent drama. Add to that the creative vision of a hidden insurgent noble class rallying to thwart King Sejong from accomplishing his vision while having him contend with a sole enemy bent on his destruction is master story telling at its best. I loved the imagery of him being portrayed as a quick tempered, foul mouthed monarch who had desires. This humanistic portrayal brought him down to earth and relatable. Honestly, if he existed today, I could see myself hanging out with him. In all, brilliantly written, directed and acted. Not to be missed.

I am now moved to learn the Hangul alphabet. To think that all that suffering was caused by ppl who where too afraid to move forward. All the actors were amazing. Not being Korean it was alittle hard to follow and I had to rewind many times but I got it.

I watched this drama about 2 months ago, but had to let it marinate before I could figure out what I wanted to say about it. It's a really good watch; great action, romance, mystery. But it left me feeling kind of lost at the end. Sincerely, I hate the ending. Too many good dead people and 1 very hard working, intense, brilliant, lonely king. I appreciate the hangul alphabet even more now after watching. If excessive numbers of dead people don't bother you in dramas, this is a really good story to see. I learned a lot and I'm really glad I watched it. btw, I still say that Song Il Guk beats out Jang Hyuk by a hair when it comes to the aimlessly-staggering-and-crying-because-I-just-received-life-altering-news thing. Compare JH in this w/ SIG in Kimchi Family and decide for yourself.

i liked this show. it had its laughing moments, its angry moments, and its sad moments. everyone did their parts well. i liked the lead actor and the man who played the king. they acted well together. i like the romance btw dol buk and so yi. i cried like a child when they couldnt be together in life, but i was happy they were together in death(spoiler, sorry). its a shame that the king had so much opposition about the korean alphabet. but its good to see how well it turned out generations later. it bet those who opposed are turning over in their graves from anger. watch the show you will like it.
