Ruler of Your Own World starring Yang Dong Geun, Lee Na Young, Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Dong Gun

Often regarded as the best Korean drama of 2002, Ruler of Your Own World was critically praised for its daring realism and refusal to rely on K-drama conventions. Yang Dong Geun heads a high-caliber cast including current stars Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Dong Gun (they went on to co-star in Sang-Doo Let's Go to School), and rising superstar film actress Lee Na Young, who first made a name for herself through Ruler.

Rough around the edges, Ko Bok-Su (Yang Dong Geun) meets Chun Kyung (Lee Na Young) after stealing her wallet shortly after being released from prison, setting into motion a chain of events that changes the lives of everyone around them. Moody, reserved, Chun Kyung begins to fall for him, while his old love, the tough, determined Mi-Rae (Gong Hyo-jin) wants him back. Ko Bok-su looks at the world with new eyes after his stint in jail and tries his best to make sense of the world and let love into his life. Both gritty and hopeful, Ruler of Your Own World is an utterly unique drama.

I realize just how good this drama is. I was going to give it four stars, but the entire cast was fantastic! The pace allowed me to know all the characters to a greater extent than in other, faster paced dramas. Those characters, then, undergo changes and shifts in perspective. The story was very real. Whatever familiar tropes appear in the plot (disease, triangles, birth secrets) got a gritty, realistic treatment. There were no villains but neither were there any goody-two- shoes heroes. Everyone had flaws and struggles. I really enjoyed the portrait of the city itself in all its glory. The male lead, Yang Dong Geun, is my type of actor - not just another pretty face but very natural performance. Fun seeing several now-famous actresses at the beginning of their careers.

... just in case it isn't clear, I really like this drama a lot. It is an atypical antithesis of what a K-drama is known to be. This one is outside the box, so if you prefer more run-of-the-mill dramas and romances then this isn't for you. You really need to have an open mind to be able to get drawn into this one. I especially like the fact that the male lead is not the typical K-drama kind of guy. He's actually a rapper and I believe he has his own label or company or something. This will appeal more to people who cheer for the under dog.

Final Review: I enjoyed this drama because it did attempt to break some Korean drama conventions. [From the patterns that I've seen.] For example, the male isn't the fussy, uptight one and the female doesn't have stylish hair and makeup...all while masking some secret agenda. Many scenes come off as damp and casual city scenes. Personally, I enjoyed how the characters continue to meet or miss each other throughout the drama with bus routes becoming the image that pulls them apart or brings them together. Cheers. Thanks DF for giving me a chance to see this drama:)

This drama really makes you feel and love Bok-Su and all the other characters. It is sad, funny, and touching. This drama was difficult to continue watching because it did seem to drag if you were distracted. You really need to take your time with it. The characters and their relationships with one another is worth it.

It really was annoying me at first until I started to go with his way of thinking. Then it started to make more sense. I went with their mood and didn't feel like crying to much for the most part, although there certainly was some heavy tear moments. I loved the way the girls showed their love unconditionally without being weak or bimbo like at all the way many Korean dramas come off. The way she handled other prospects and distractions was so good. Goksu grew on you as the show went on,as you realized just how good hearted he was. The secondary love interest mentioned in the synopsis really really was so cool as well. He was so lucky, I almost wish they had shared him So many F...ed up people ,with hurting but great hearts in this show. The ending was perfect for me considering the story. All in all objectively a 4 imo and a 10 out of 5 for me personally.

This drama just drew me in to its world completely, unlike other fairy tale-like K-Dramas. I don't know much about Korean society, thus I really can't tell how significant this drama was when it was first broadcast; but even as a stand alone, great story. I liked the lead actors. I think I missed a lot of stubtlties with this translation but in my mind, the work shines through all the murkiness. I hope it won some prizes. I give it 6 stars.

Great movie. Difficult to watch at times. Sad. Happy. Beautiful scenes. Really excellent directing and acting. Not a movie for everyone. It's a thinking movie. Not meant to entertain so much as inspire you to rethink your life. There were some parts that were annoying like Mirae crying so much but it was a movie I didn't fast forward through. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
