East of Eden starring Song Seung Hun, Yun Jung Hoon, and Dennis Oh

The twisty, multi-generational saga of two brothers who are switched at birth, East of Eden was one of the most high-profile, high-budget dramas of 2008 (and 2009). It features an ensemble cast of drama icons and veterans including Song Seung Hun, Yeon Jung Hoon, Han Ji Hye, and Lee Da Hae (she of My Girl fame). Costars included Lee Yeon Hee, Lee Mi Sook, and Kim Bum in a pre-Boys Before Flowers role, with much-lauded performances. A riveting revenge drama, it pulled in stellar ratings over its entire run with an average of 25% and swept the 2008 MBC Awards, winning a grand total of 15.

On the same night in a small mining town, two children are born in the same hospital. One is the son of miner Lee Ki-chul. The other is the son of mine manager Shin Tae-Hwan. When a nurse, driven by hatred of Tae-Hwan after he has an affair with her and then abandons her, switches the babies at birth and a train of events is set in motion that will tear apart the lives of all involved.

Some time later, Shin Tae-Hwan, an ambitious and ruthless coal mine manager, has his sights set on acquring a coal mining company called the Taesung Group. When Lee Ki-chul gets in his way, Tae-Hwan has him killed in an underground explosion. Ki-chul's son, Lee Dong Chul (Song Seung Hun), unable to rescue him in time, vows revenge on the man responsible for his father's death. Growing up with hatred of the Shin family, he doesn't realize that his younger brother, Dong Wook (Yun Jung Hoon) is in fact the son of Shin Tae-Hwan.

Shadowed by his father's death, he embarks on a path which takes him from juvenile detention to the mob. Cold and withdrawn, the only person he really loves is Dong Wook. Dong Wook, meanwhile, after struggling through his own obstacles, becomes a prosecutor and vows to help his brother seek revenge. Their worlds fall apart however when they discover that Dong Wook is not Dong Chul's blood brother, but rather the son of his most hated enemy Tae-Hwan, and that Myung Hun (Park Hae Jin), raised under Tae-hwan's care to become a ruthless businessman, is in fact Dong Chul's brother...

High-octane, complex, and easy on the eyes by virtue of its beautiful stars, East of Eden has something for everyone, and stands out among the pantheon of dramas. Great story I absolutely loove this drama. The character development in the story is beautiful. I've really gotten attached to the characters. Episodes are addivting to watch and has me at the edge of my seat till the end. One thing that gets me though are the crying scenes. I think there's too much of it, in my opinion. But I know they're there to capture the pain and sadness of the situation. Sometimes has me tearing up myself, so I can't complain too much. BEAUTIFUL STORY! I don't agree with the ratings it currently has on this site. It should easily have 5 stars. :D <3 All actors did a wonderful job. I was instantly drawn in.

Seriously? Only 3.5 stars??? Okay, sure the drama is slow, bad ending (like all Korean drams, agreed?!), blah blah. It's REALLY good. The plot is pure genius. It creates so much drama and tension that many other corny and lame dramas lack. AND the character chemistry is good. Just watch it...skip around if you have to. Some episodes aren't really important.

I liked it a lot it was a fascinating story... I didn't think I would last 56 episodes but I did. It was good storyline, and the twist and turn of story kinda took me all the way to 56 epi. they were many kidnaping in this story. also kinda not like the ending though at the very end when he die. (sorry spoiler alert). Nonetheless, it was a very good drama to watch. I loved when they were kids, I cried with them. and everytime they have this 'sign' thing you know when their bid 'goodbye/hi kiss' I thought that was touching you know ~ It moved me.

1st Episode was rather disappointing... As an American born in Hong Kong, the film's use of Hong Kong street scenes to pass it off as Macao is an unforgivable offense. You can see the discrepancies everywhere, to name but a few: 1. Red taxi, indicative of Hong Kong Island taxis 2. Red-top minibuses 3. Metal road signs, as opposed to ceramic ones used in Macao (one even showed a scene was filmed in the Tsing-Yi island area) 4. As an extension to #3, the road signs are in Trad. Chinese/English, not Trad. Chinese/Portuguese, as Macanese road signs are. If you are shooting in Hong Kong, say it's Hong Kong! Don't try to pass it off as Macao! This show was sold everywhere, and Hongkongers, as well as Macanese, would have picked up the mistakes easily! However, the show seems to be OK in other respects.
