Emperor of the Sea starring Choi Soo Jong, Song Il Gook, and Soo Ae
Additional episodes will be added soon!
Intrigue, heroics, and sea adventures fill this tale of a man who rises from slave to lord of the seas. Emperor of the Sea is a grand, explosive epic that tracks real-life historical figure Jang Bo Go who rose from unknown origins to become one of the most powerful men in Korea. The famous series dominated the ratings, holding the number-one spot in Korea for the majority of its 51 episodes, and launched Song Il Gook (A Man Called God, Jumong) and Soo Ae (9 End 2 Outs, Athena) on their careers.
Born a slave on the docks of Cheonghae, Jang Bo Go (Choi Soo Jong) loses his mother to pirates at a young age. Taken to China and sold as a gladiator-slave, he works his way upward through wits and daredevil cunning. Becoming best friends with the charismatic Yeom Jang (Song Il Gook), the two are trained in martial arts by an old master. Jang Bo Go becomes a military commander and then a sea merchant waging war with pirates for ultimate command of the seas. Possessed of his own private fleet, he is renowned and feared by the government, citizens, and pirates of East Asia. Meanwhile, he and Yeon compete for the love of the beautiful Jeong-hwa (Soo Ae).
I just watched this entire series...what a disappointment. I got tired of the corny syrupy reflections of lost love or unrequited love. This was not worth the investment of time. 51 episodes and this is what I get??? Whatever!
What a shame that this drama was so very good up to about episode 45 when it was as if the original writers were replaced by clowns! Characters start doing things totally out of character, actions make no sense and then comes episode 51 which has to be the worst ending to anything I've ever seen. What were they thinking?
After the very few episode that I watched I was about to give up because I was getting boring but when I decided to let's give it a couple of mre episodes that's when I said ok, now he exciting part has just begin. Song Il Gook was he reason why I watch this drama. No matter how the ending ended ( not so good), yet he has always been the best actor for me. I love you Song Il Gook!
You will enjoy the excellent acting by all characters. The cinematography is superb with outstanding colors. The choice of song for the theme vocal, playing in the background at certain times, was right on.
It is not often that all the major characters are killed off by the end of the episodes, "save one". Who might that be? See and enjoy.
With me it was like Lay's Potato Chips. One (episode) just would not do.
Kindest Regards
Some spoiler! Great story telling and very well written. This is an engrossing and interesting drama to watch. There is a lot more substance here than the other historical dramas I have watched so far. The characters good and bad are very enjoyable to watch. I am only sad that by episode 21 I am totally disgusted with Il Guk's character Yum Moon who is becoming too despicable. Watching his character look proud of kidnapping a woman because he isn't man enough to get his enemy otherwise is nauseating. Hopefully Yum Moon who started off with a sense of honour will redeem himself. Back to the drama.
The veteran director of classics Jewel In the Palace and wildly popular Yi San returns with another historical epic in this tale of a young commoner who rises to become the king's concubine.
