Queen Seon Duk starring Lee Yo Won and Ko Hyun Jung

Queen Seon Duk is a big budget sageuk (historical drama) from MBC, starring Lee Yo-Won and a star-studded cast of veteran actors. Queen Seon Duk has been climbing steadily in the ratings since it aired, hovering just below 30% by its 10th episode.

Lee Yo Won is Princess Duk Man, the eldest daughter of King Jinpyeong, ruler of Silla. When the king, having no male heirs, appoints her as successor to the throne, the Princess becomes the first Queen of Silla and the first female ruler in Korean history, later to be known as Queen Seon Duk. Possessed of extraordinary charm and wit, the Princess embarks on an incredible journey as she seeks to rule wisely and keep her kingdom united in the turbulent, war-torn era of the Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla). Beset by conflicts both internal and external, her greatest enemy at court is Mi Shil (Ko Hyun Jung), a beautiful court woman who manipulates men to bring herself into a position of power and is second only to the queen herself. Veteran actors include Park Ye Jin as the mother of Kim Chun Chu (Yoo Seung Ho) who becomes the 29th king of Silla and Uhm Tae Woong as famed Silla general Kim Yoo Shin.

Queen Seon Duk is the riveting story of the struggles of an extraordinary woman and her journey to become a famed and much-beloved queen.

Great drama, terrible subs They really shove these commercials down your throat, don't they? The frame froze at 1hr 02 min; I reloaded, and had 5 ads thrown at me in succession. Maybe they froze the frame on purpose so they can get more money out of Verizon-Cotton-Glade? Great drama though. Probably the best out of the historical pieces. Certainly better than Jumong-- I think it's over rated. Again, the subbing is stilted at best and quite often atrocious. Why don't they just use plain language like the Korean original and let the drama and the story speak for themselves? I saw The Snow Queen with French subtitles and they do a much better job by simple straight translation. I think the problem is the subbers arn't fluent both in Korean and English and are trying to make up for it by using unnecessarily pretentious words convoluted phrases. Keep it simple, $tupid! is my advice. Maybe I should see Queen Seon Duk with French subtitles.

Another Excellent Korean History Drama!!!!! I am proud of Queen Seon Duk with her accomplishments, especially holding the title for being the first female ruler. She overcame many endeavors which won the hearts of many followers. Her courage and strength carried her all the way to the much coveted throne. This drama depicts strong characters with excellent storyline and acting skills. I swear to you from episodes 20 through 50, I watched in 3 days!!!! I couldn't stop watching the drama because each episode ended with a cliff hanger. The mind games Queen Seon Duk and Mishil was playing with each other alone was riveting. There are so much more qualities that made this epic drama superb but I don't it to be a spoiler. This movie had a lasting impact on me, just like Dae Jang Geum, maybe because holding a title for being the first at a great accomplishment is deserving enough but the quality of each scene is mind blowing as well. You will love it!!!!

MIshil One word Mishil, wow what an actress, you hated her and respected her brilliance at the same time, The actress playing the role was so superb. I mean what other female in any drama or show, basically had two husbands and forced them to sit across each other on a regular basis. The older queen, the actress was okay, not the best but not the worst either. All in all, a lovely drama, that caused me to read more about Korean/Shilla history.

Lee Yo Won not suited to the role * * * SPOILERS * * * Engaging and compelling drama about the first queen of dynastic Korea, it falls short in its depiction of the lead character, Queen Seon Duk. Deokman (Queen Seon Duk) starts as a lowly trainee in the palace's elite royal guards. She can barely hold a sword, much less fight with it. She displays no talent for military strategies but the viewer is expected to believe that she can lead an army to victory over the upsurper, Mishil. I was disappointed that Deokman's character could not fight, given that the female descendants of Genghis and Kublai Khan (not too far away) were formidable warriors. In those days (circa 600 AD) no ruler, whether male or female, could seize and hold a throne without being a force on the battlefield as well as in politics. I think a physically stronger and more aggressive actress would have played this part better. But as far as I'm aware there are no Korean Angelina Jolies.

great!!! it was a great way of telling the history of the queen...got me so interested i actually want to research the real history of the queen. awesome story and complicated love story between many characters. i especially liked yushin's true love and devotion to the queen. loved mishil and bidam's characters as well. it was great overall...so sad it's over.

Bidam one of greatest tragic figures! Koreans are lucky to have such great television compared to the garbge TV in America. The acting, sets, plots outshine. Queen Seon Duk is like one of the great novels. Bidam and Mishil are two of the best crafted characters in fiction. Bidam is as interesting as Sheakspeares tragic heroes if not moreso. I have watched 25 Korean dramas on Dramafever or DVD. The acting, especially by the young, is superb. What amazing talent. I suggest that someone consider composing an opera with Mishil, Bidam, and Seon Duk as ptincipal singers. What a LOVE story! What a TRAGEDY! Beats Italian opera plots. Lucky Korea. Keep thm coming. Jumong still the very best.

LMAO LMAO WTF 4blossoms? This is a drama man. Don't bring in this stupid history stuff. This drama was made for entertainment not to prove that like DeokMan or whatever was one of the greatest female rulers of all time ok? But its a fantastic drama! Pulled me in since episode 1 :D

Be patient To new viewers-- its a bit clunky and not quite beleivable how they depict Seon Duk once she becomes Hwarang-i was disappointed too and really liked the earlier actor who played her in the desert and displayed a lot of spunk and charisma-but give it a chance-I am well along and it seems like they are trying to create the context for her next transformation as Mishil's worthy opponent--so the namby pamby girl soldier role will be shed and the powerful strategic leader will emerge-yes many twists and turns.
