Queen Seon Duk starring Lee Yo Won and Ko Hyun Jung

Queen Seon Duk is a big budget sageuk (historical drama) from MBC, starring Lee Yo-Won and a star-studded cast of veteran actors. Queen Seon Duk has been climbing steadily in the ratings since it aired, hovering just below 30% by its 10th episode.

Lee Yo Won is Princess Duk Man, the eldest daughter of King Jinpyeong, ruler of Silla. When the king, having no male heirs, appoints her as successor to the throne, the Princess becomes the first Queen of Silla and the first female ruler in Korean history, later to be known as Queen Seon Duk. Possessed of extraordinary charm and wit, the Princess embarks on an incredible journey as she seeks to rule wisely and keep her kingdom united in the turbulent, war-torn era of the Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla). Beset by conflicts both internal and external, her greatest enemy at court is Mi Shil (Ko Hyun Jung), a beautiful court woman who manipulates men to bring herself into a position of power and is second only to the queen herself. Veteran actors include Park Ye Jin as the mother of Kim Chun Chu (Yoo Seung Ho) who becomes the 29th king of Silla and Uhm Tae Woong as famed Silla general Kim Yoo Shin.

Queen Seon Duk is the riveting story of the struggles of an extraordinary woman and her journey to become a famed and much-beloved queen.

If you're entertained by subtle (and not so subtle) court intrigue, romance, power struggles and a peek into palace life, then look no further than Queen Seon Duk. Even if historicals are not your cup of tea, your preferences will permanently change after watching this. It is rare to experience a drama where I did not only root for the underdog, but also gained some compassion and understanding for the "bad guys". Lady Mishil is a most memorable villain! Her acting/character development was just amazing. It was easy to hate her evil schemes, but I also felt a grudging admiration for her--what a scene stealer! Like other excellent historical Korean dramas, this one completely hijacked my emotions! The characters were multi-layered and the twists of the story were entirely addictive (so get ready to lose some sleep). Queen Seon Duk is among my top picks; right up there with Jumong, Yi San, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal!

This series stands alone among historical sagas in dominating the imagination, overwhelming the senses, taking you back in time where cunning and intellect ruled the day. A time when power and might was achieved through winning the hearts and minds of the people. This is what it took to rule and two powerful women who possessed these qualities in abundance fought to win a kingdom. Lady Mishil whose sphere of influence dominated Shilla and who ruled by proxy made for a formidable villian. By using just cause and principle, she was able to achieve the impossible. Only to be succeeded by Queen Seon Duk who wrestled this power away from her to become Korea's first female monarch. It is said that fear is the offspring of the unknown which creates mistrust and Seon Duk through her cunning made good use of this strategy to thwart her enemies. Turmoil, romance, intrigue and suspense come to a head in this one of a kind drama series which will definitely captivate you from beginning to end.

I have to tell you I hate subtitles. I am American and can only speak English. I started watching this with my daughter and quickly became addicted. The subtitles just fade away as you are drawn in to the story. All 62 episodes were watched. Hated to see it end. I cried a lot. I am totally enthralled with this show. Thank you for making it and Wikipedia ty for having some information on history. Do not go read Wikipedia if your watching this it will ruin the last episodes for sure. Superb!

After Mishil died it was hard to watch because it seem to drag on. The actress who played Mishil is what made this drama so good. She even brought out the best in the actress who played Deokman.

This drama is definitely going down on the list as one of my all time favorites. I loved the music, the characters, the plot, and the scenery. Everything was pretty solid. It's without a doubt one of my favorite historical dramas - maybe even my top favorite. I also loved the fact that instead of it being a bad vs. good thing, it was more of human nature at its worst. The 'bad guys' were redeemable and even the 'good guys' made some bad decisions. The only slight complaint I have is the ending. However, since the ending did not surprise me at all and still left me feeling somewhat satisfied...Five stars out of five. :)

I love this drama so much. it's a story that lift your spirit on how to trust the one you love and not greedy for power. Mi shil acting is superb, it makes you hate her but love her at the end. But I love most is The Queen, she's beautiful and very natural, Wonderful acting. Bidam makes me cry at the end. EVERYBODY DID A GOOD JOB!! GREAT STORY!!!

This has been an a very interesting and entertaining drama, though not historically correct. I still loved Lee Yo Won as Deokman / Queen Seokduk. The ending was a little anticlimatic but all in all a wonderful story. I think the drama should have ended with the vanquishing of Lady Mishil and the crowning of Deokman as Queen Seon Deok. As far as the love story between Deokman/Queen Seon Deok and Lord Bidman, I think many missed the true love story, that is between her and General Kim Yushin, one that took up the majority of the series from almost the beginning until the very end.
