Tamra the Island starring Seo Woo, Im Joo Hwan, and Pierre Deporte

Directed by the producer-director behind classic drama The Legend, this cult hit showcases a cast of rising young stars. Seo Woo, Cinderella's Sister and can also be seen in The Housemaid, won two acting awards for this, her first leading role. Im Joo Hwan, coming off an attention-grabbing role in Boys Over Flowers, also turns in an impressive performance. French model and actor Pierre Deporte co-stars as an English castaway. Part historical comedy, part romance, Tamra the Island features both offbeat humor and stunning, fairy-tale like romance, shot against the backdrop of beautiful Jeju Island. Quirky, endearing, and lovely, it won itself an impassioned fan base.

Based on a manwha of the same name, Tamra the Island is inspired by the story of a Dutch explorer, Hendrik Hamel, who was shipwrecked on Jeju in the mid 17th century. A young Englishman, William (Pierre Deporte) is shipwrecked on modern day Jeju Island, and is forced to deal with the quirky inhabitants. After falling for the cheerful diver, the lovable Beo Jin (Seo Woo), he must compete for her affections with exiled nobleman, Park Kyu. Beo Jin will have to choose between the kind-hearted, innocent castaway, and the haughty, closed-off prince as life on the island teaches all three what it means to grow up.

I watched the 21 episode of this drama and it was great. The editing to make it fit the 16 episode made the story really confusing. If you go to Hulu.com, you'll be able to see the 21 episodes.

Let me see if I can get this right. Is it for the hot guys or the feisty women? Is it for romance or tragedies? Maybe we like seeing the beautiful far off destinations that they can take us to. I like that men can show emotion without losing there masculinity. This Drama had all that and more. I so far have found few dramas that I did not like and I guess that is why I am hooked and still watching them. You will enjoy this one once you get past the bathroom humor in the first couple episodes.

Watching this show will neither solve the world's problems nor make you a better person. However, it's quite likely to make you happy--from scatological humor to a fun love triangle to an evil, plotting bad guy (erm...girl) this drama has it all. The plot isn't especially well constructed, but it's still an amusing breeze through Joseon life with enough wacky fusion elements to stay interesting.

The story was flowing nicely then in last episodes it just dropped off a cliff like poop no wonder ratings slid, and was cancelled...Once you set a plot/lovestory try to stick to it, and not twist it like in this. Obvious producers racial bias is shown in the last episodes.

The girl's immitation of a 10 year old is very irritating. Why is she so gaga over William and somehow nearly at the last episode she likes the exile, after being cold and rude the whole time. The switch was not convincing in the least - but I think it was her acting and not the script.

Jang Beo-Jin was so cute and believable that I could see her playing peter pan. And William and Exile were fantastic. The scenery was breathtaking and the fight scenes were so realistic. The politics of korea in the 1600 era dud give me a lot of problems but guess the greed was there so I understood that. and the village characters were fantastic. have to say excelant in every catagory. thank you

I love this show! This is my 3rd time watching it. The acting in English is awful, but it gets better, stick with it.

Honestly, I need to thank reviewers for convincing me to stick it out beyond the first episode. The acting in English is frighteningly awful. Once you get to the point that it's all in Korean, though, the acting truly shines and the show gets past the trite affairs of the first half into the intense politics of the second. In terms of acting, many of the minor characters were incredibly charming but I have to admire Im Joo Hwan and Kim Mi Kyung (of course) as well as Seo Woo. Sure, she was insufferable at first, but by the end I found her utterly adorable (she completely won me over ep.14). Lee Sun Ho had one of the hardest roles, given multiple languages to juggle-- major props. I enjoyed the music- the ending song wrenches my heart- and the inclusion of the illustrations in the end; since it was based on a manhwa the story comes full circle. The ending was rushed, yes, and although somewhat satisfying, it's tugging at me to buy the box set.
