The Painter of the Wind starring Moon Geun Young and Park Shin Yang

With an all-star cast, this beautifully-filmed, award-winning drama was one of the highlights of 2008. Korea's sweetheart Moon Geun Young stars as a gifted, cross-dressing painter trying to unravel the mystery of her father's death. Park Shin Yang (Lovers in Paris) is her charismatic and brilliant mentor, while Moon Chae Won and Bae Soo Bin, who both leaped to fame the following year in Shining Inheritance, co-star. Assured, delicate, and lovely, this period romance/mystery pulled in successful ratings and is not one to miss.

In 1776, a prominent court painter is killed after being secretly commissioned by the crown prince to paint a portrait. His friend and fellow painter Seo Jing begins investigating his death, but he and his wife also end up dead. His daughter goes missing. Ten years later, a young student named Shin Yun-bok enters the Academy of Painting, where master painter, Kim Hong-do takes the talented Yun-bok under his wing. As they work together, he begins to fall for her without knowing her true identity as a woman.

Great drama, beautifully executed. A different look at the familiar story of the painters during this historical period (Yi San, Portrait of a Beauty). No offense, but I prefer 20 episodes of painting competitions, with exciting animation at times, than 50 episodes of food contests. Even got free lessons in composition! Made me want to buy the novel to resolve my questions about the characters and the differences between this drama and the movie, Portrait of a Beauty. I was actually relieved with the finale considering the way other historical dramas end. Congratulations on an exquisite drama.

I started to love painting due to watching this. From start to finish I enjoyed this drama. I laughed, cried, and my heart stopped due to suspense. I applaud Moon Geun Young for acting so well here. I will give her the best actress award for portraying her role as a young painter. I loved her in My Little Bride and I loved her here. And, no one can portray the role of a teacher to her other than Park Shin Yang. He's so funny and my heart went to him whenever he cried. Despite the age gap between them they can still pass as lovers due to great chemistry. SPOILER ALERT: I just want to rewrite the ending. Why did the writer made it so. There were too much suffering to make it a sad ending. They both deserve to be happy. I wish he could find her to tell her that everything will be okay because the king will protect them.

[SPOILER]5 stars!!! i loved it. so good. great story. lots of tension, emotions, sensuality. the love triangle is interesting.both Yun Bok-Hong Do and Yun Bok-Jeong Hyang have goodchemistry. they work well together. interesting enough Moon Chae Won And Moon Geun Young have won best couple award @ 2008 SBS Drama awards (youtube.com/watch?v=WweQ6ZMP1a4). the only down side is that the bad guys (the dowager queen, the merchant, Yun-Bok's stepfather who messed her up for his own sake...) are not really punished to my taste. i really had a great time and the paintings are often really beautiful... royal painter Shin Yun Bok was really good... very nicely done ^_^ i'd say to finish, this drama is a must see!

Although I am a fan of your garden-variety gender-bender, this mesmerizing, sophisticated alternative brings depth to an admittedly shallow genre. The Painter of the Wind has a lot to offer: an interesting, creative approach to art history, intense drama, memorable music, and a compelling love triangle (minus the petty conflict) with great performances from all involved.

This drama is truly a gem of Korean production. Everything from the costumes to the set was beautiful, and the acting was exceptional. It was both hilarious and emotional, down to the very end. It was also very informative and taught a lot about Korean painting. This drama brought the subject to life in a completely new way! I found myself fascinated as I watched paintings come to life and learned about their interpretation and the detail that went into them. I've seen many historical dramas (Dong Yi, Chuno, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Tree With Deep Roots, etc.), and this one ranks up there with the best of them. :)

The Painter of the Wind was a K-Drama that I had intentionally skipped over several times, simply because I thought that I wasn't going to enjoy it based on what I had seen in its description. I was wrong. First and foremost, a lot of credit for my pleasure goes to two actresses, Moon Geun Young and Moon Chae Won. In my eyes, these two played their relationship phenomenally well. You could feel the emotion in the room when these two were together and the feelings of the characters came through the screen clearly. One scene in particular sticks out, that being when Yun-Bok thought she was going to lose her hand and in a night of sad drinking paints what she feels has become her muse, the ginseng Jung Hyang. I thought that the relationship between Yun-Bok and Hong-Do was well-acted but I wasn't too thrilled with the visual. Yun-Bok was supposed to be in her late teens but Hong-Do looked kind of creepy in some of his interactions. I give this series four stars and encourage people to watch.
