Baker King Kim Tak Goo starring Yoon Shi Yoon and Joo Won

One of the highest-rated dramas of the past decade, Baker King is a powerhouse blend of underdog tale, family saga, and romance.

Kim Tak Goo (Yoon Shi Yoon) grows up the street-smart son of a struggling single mother. When he's 12 years old, however, he discovers that he is the illegitimate son of Goo Il Jong (Jun Kwang Ryul), the president of massive baking company Samhwa Enterprise. Hoping for a better life for her son, his mother sends him to his father and then mysteriously disappears. Tak Goo winds up out on the streets and twelve years later, he's a cocky ruffian on a desperate search for his lost mother.

While searching for his mother he winds up at a bakery run by Master Pal Bong (Jang Hang Sun), his father's former mentor. After revealing his natural talent for baking, he becomes Pal Bong's apprentice, alongside the unpleasant Ma Joon (Joo Won), who is hiding the fact that he's Il Jong's (legitimate) son. Meanwhile beautiful, haunted Yoo Kyung (Eugene), Tak Goo's first love, reappears in his life, while Pal Bong's charming granddaughter, Mi Sun (Lee Young Ah), falls for him too. Birth secrets, class tensions, lies, love, and rivalry abound in this drama, but at the heart of it all is one young man's quest to overcome his past and find happiness against all odds.

This is a good drama but is the president a dumb person? How could he trust his assistant after too many things happened around him??? He knew what his assistant did to his son Tak Gu and still used him??? How could he let his assistant have too much power??? And the president also acted dumb in front of his wife, too. Besides, how could a woman who slept with another man, not only once to try to have a son, but many years after she had Ma Sun, until her mother-in-law passed away, still said that she loved her husband and did not want to lose him? The drama is overall good, but I felt irritated while watching it - too many scenes that make no sense to me.

this drama is really good! I really want Tak Gu and Yu Kyung to be together but i know it's not gonna turn out that way. How can Yu Kyung force herself to love and be with Ma Jun whom she doesn't even love. Dramas don't always turn out the way you want it to be.

Baker King is anything but original, it's probably THE perfect example of a cliched Korean drama. The plot is ridiculous and a complete tear-jerker, and yet I was invested in every second. I have to give credit to the team because otherwise, I'd say this drama could've easily been a failure. The Tak Gu child actor really impressed me! He set a high standard and was onscreen for a good chunk of the episodes, so naturally I was depressed when little Tak Gu grew up! Fortunately, Yoon Shi Yoon didn't disappoint, he convinced me in his role and did a great job in his emotional scenes. The evil stepmother was a delight. I enjoyed the twist in the love pairing. I'm not sure if I always believed the way the characters' reasoning/backstabbing was written, it was kind of a stretch and at times, unbelievable and inconsistent in terms of character growth. Baker King was good, but it's not my favorite.

If Ma jun ends up with Tak Goo's girlfriend then we will know she is just as big of a loser as he is.

I normally watch lighter fare, but I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about. In the end it was worth it. The only reason I didn't give it a perfect score is that at times it seemed like they used too many forced coincidental setups to move the story along, especially considering how most of the plot movement had a natural feel. I think the best thing about the drama was that at some point all you could empathize with every character. No one was perfect, everyone had their flaws and made mistakes, the beauty was how they dealt with those things. Even though you could see the major fork in the road for each character, they also showed how sometimes it is the smaller paths that we take that have an even stronger influence on who we are as people.

Took me a few episodes to get into it, because it starts slow, but by the end it's easily one of the most memorable series I've ever seen. One more thing to note - this drama brings to mind the exact reason I got into Korean dramas in the first place. It uses symbolism and subtext (which are almost extinct on American television). But more than that, it's an allegory about Buddhist principles (filial piety is the most notable, but they even go so far as to have Tak Gu paraphrase zen parables). It's actually about something more than just some sordid affairs; it touches on themes of personal responsibility and several other virtues that are generally lacking in my own culture. You take more than light entertainment away from this series.

I just couldn't stop watching, it just all made sense. It was riveting and addictive, but i would think Kim tak ku would be the president but i guess it had to happen. You have to watch this, and i also loved the special ep31. they're all so pleasant and funny.

Great drama for the sake of the male lead as a child and as an adult. What kind of parents are these?! Kim Tak Goo and Go Ma Joon's parents are just useless. Either they damage their children psychologically or they leave their children unprotected and hope and pray for the best. Tak Goo's father is the worst. He is almost as bad as the father in Stairway to Heaven. He started this mess and he was so selfish. I don't care how meek he is. His greed for a son and his lack of responsibilty are pathetic. But still Tak Goo is the best, he survives despite the vultures who want to steel his purity and turn his heart black. Go Tak Goo!

The title of this drama may make this seem like a light drama..but it was very intense. Excellent plot and acting. One of the best Korean dramas yet!
