Giant starring Lee Bum Soo, Park Jin Hee, and Hwang Jung Eum

Three siblings seek revenge in this superb historical drama that captures the tensions and shifting moods of 1970s Korea.

Three siblings: Lee Kang Mo (Lee Bum Soo), his older brother Sung Mo (Park Sang Min), and younger sister Mi Joo (Hwang Jung Eum). Are separated after their father is killed in a smuggling scheme and their mother dies soon after. Kang Mo is raised by Hwang Tae Sub, who unbeknownst to him, is responsible for his father's death, and begins to fall for his daughter. Meanwhile, older brother Sung Mo becomes an agent for the Korean Intelligence Agency under the tutelage of a man who also had a hand in their father's death. Sang Mo locates his siblings and begins investigating their father's death. As terrible secrets are revealed, Kang Mo and his love Jung Yeon are torn apart, and Sang Mo pays a terrible price for uncovering the truth about their father's death.

Mi Joo, meanwhile has fallen for a businessman who is also involved with Hwang Tae Sub, flees and makes her own way, becoming a famous singer. When she returns, she's determined to get revenge on the man who abandoned her, and the three siblings all join forces to bring down those who took everything away from them.

An empire/business revenge tale will always have the danger of veering directly into unapologetic melodrama territory, but if deftly written and balanced just right, it can become luminous and deeply profound. This exceptionally well-written and acted drama definitely falls into the latter categroy. There were plenty of angst and tears, but somehow, in the light of the interconnected storylines, it all seemed essential to character development and proper plot pacing. What pushed this into extra-special territory, however, is the fact that, at its very core, this was a story of three siblings and their unabiding love for each other. And how that love drove them to unimaginable heights of success and of calamity. It was a painful world that they lived in, but it sure as hell was a beautiful one.

Modern Korean history from a moderately liberal perspective, IMHO.

Though full of caricatures (starting with Cho Pil-yeon and Hwang Jeon-sik) typical in dramas, the story was well thought out, the acting good. Giant holds the viewer's unflagging interest through 60 episodes.

I just decided to watch this coz I want to see the young characters and Kim Soo Hyun...the young Kang Mo is a very good child actor. Love these two young actors from " The Moon Embracing the Sun". Anyway, I never get bored watching ep 1-8...I'm on ep 9 and they're now grown ups :( I wish they would just stay as young... I'd like to hate Jo Pil Yun but then sometimes he has some good sides , for sure he's bad...so I have a mixed emotions watching this drama. So far, it's interesting...hopefully I would be able to make it to the end :)..........Finally, I made it to the end...after witnessing all the evilness of Jo Pilyeon on every episodes is very exhausting. A bittersweet ending... I love ep 50, that was a good scene to watch. Overall, it's worth watching...it kept my interest until the end of it.

I thought Giant was an excellent drama which as an American, reminds me of the very recent history of Korea’s violent and tumultuous past and how they are linked at the hip with many Americans who also fought and died in their fight for democracy during the Korean war. 1988 seems like a lifetime ago when protestors filled the streets and literally died for their cause. I think the drama had a very good cast, including some of the younger ones, especially the young Kangmo and young Jungyoum. They both should be great leading actors because of their ability and looks. I also thought Jung Bo Suk as JoPilyeon was a little over-the-top in the nutty behavior. Somehow Joo Sang Wook has never lived up to my expectations, including The Thorn birds. If he had the acting ability of Lee Bum Soo he would have been a better match for the leading role because of his looks. But he can’t hold a candle to Bum Soo’s acting ability which is truly one of the best, IMHO.

On episode 32 and so far so good. It's an emotional roller coaster, the only relationship in this drama that urks me so bad is the relationship between Miju and Minwoo. I wanted to hit Miju so bad for being so stupid and oblivious. Everytime I saw those two together I just wanna throw up and beat up both of them. On episode 34, did everyone just forget that Minwoo was the one who plotted to kill Gangmo??!!! Ugggh! Frustrating!!! Minwoo is a total jerk!!! You'll see what I mean...
