ATHENA: Goddess of War starring Jung Woo Sung, Cha Seung Won, and Soo Ae

Check out the ATHENA Behind the Scenes Special Episode! It is marked as 'Episode 21'!

A year after the blockbuster spy thriller IRIS comes the spin-off series ATHENA. This drama marks the return to the small screen for Jung Woo Sung, a film actor whose last drama was in 1.5 back in 1995. Cha Seung Won (City Hall) joins the cast as the cold leader of ruthless organization ATHENA, and Su Ae (9 End 2 Outs) as the double agent caught between two men. This drama premiered with strong ratings over 20%, and its unique cast sets this drama apart from its predecessor. It also stars Lee Ji Ah (Beethoven Virus), Choi Si Won (Oh My Lady), and Kim Min Jong (A Man Called God)

Lee Jung Woo (Jung Woo Sung) is a special agent at the National Anti-Terror Service (NTS), but is put on babysitting duty when his assignment is to watch over a former North Korean intelligence agent, Kim Ki Soo (Kim Min Jong). He finds himself drawn to fellow agent Yoon Hye In (Su Ae), but she remains cool and distant from him. Little does he know, she is also a double agent for NTS and is placed within ATHENA, a terrorist organization set on attaining the latest nuclear power technology and headed by Son Hyuk (Cha Seung Won).

Athena is not as compelling as it could have been. Woo Sung is lacking the presence and charisma of Byung Hun, which is one of the reasons IRIS was a must watch show. And while the pacing is uneven, with long stretches of espionage and character development that doesn't play well with the writing, and then the occasional action piece, the main redeeming factor is the gravitas of the NTS Director. He alone has kept my interest to the point where I fast forward to scenes that he is in while filling in the predictable blanks. Also, the comic relief characters are a distraction and many could have been left out to provide a tighter story. As it is, I just didn't care as much about the characters or their relationship matrix.

I have to say...this one took as long as IRIS to finish...not because of pacing or action. Simply put, there is so much to digest in the story. I found myself trying to remember all of the nuances, as they all had something to do with the story. The writing is superb, the acting is stellar, and the side characters have just as much punch as the mains. I do find some of the plot points a little too predictable ( some were rehashes of IRIS), but all in all, a great story. I think some set ups for IRIS 2 are going to be interesting to watch as well...especially Seon Hwa...that's going to be EPIC.

i started out really loving this show. Throughout the whole show I have to admit I felt really sorry for the bad guys. I liked them more than NTS agents, On top of that i thought son hyuk and and that other chick would have a deeper connection than a damn one night stand. SPOILER ALERT...the ending was pretty shitty. So its kinda cool in a bittersweet way that so many people died in the end but come on the damn director didnt die, that was lame. I was really upset when andy died. And Hye in should of stayed dead with son hyuk. It had a wonderful meaning behind it......
