Oguri Kozukenosuke (小栗上野介)

In the last days of the Tokugawa era, one official in the Shogunate, Oguri Kozukenosuke, tried to modernize Japan. He called for drastic reforms including the establishment of stock companies and postal services, which were realized by the following Meiji government after his death. Due to his radical personality and stubbornness, he was dismissed from his position as a superintendent of financial affairs a number of times. In the midst of political turmoil in the last days of the Shogunate, he continued working on the reforms of the country as the member of the old regime.
