Note 1: Goblin is included here even though it started in December 2016. It was excluded when we reported on the most popular K-dramas in 2016, so it's only fair to include it for this year. On the other hand, the very popular campus romance Love O2O from 2016 is excluded despite its continuing popularity.

Note 2: This list is only for dramas. However, fans of the highly popular reality program Running Man should be happy to know that it is ranked in the second place among all shows.

Note 3: Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo went on air in November 2016, but it arrived at DramaFever in February 2017. That it still entered the Top 10 despite a late start speaks highly of its captivating story and the on-screen couple's strong chemistry. New leading man Nam Joo Hyuk recharged his star power with The Bride of the Water God, which rose to the sixth place.

What conclusions might one draw from this list of top dramas?

Korean dramas continue to reign overall and are the most diverse in genres across modern and historical productions. Chinese dramas, however, are outstanding in fabulous historical sagas and epic fantasy romances with gorgeous costumes and vivid landscapes. There are also gripping thrillers from both Korean and Chinese dramas that are popular even though they didn't make it to the Top 10. Overall, there is a good balance between modern and period dramas, reflecting our viewers' wide-ranging interests and eclectic tastes in a variety of topics. Nevertheless, romance and fantasy are notably the strongest elements favored by our viewers.

For the thriller category, there are some excellent choices despite the darker crime themes. For instance, Stranger (Secret Forest) was recently selected by the New York Times as one of the best international TV shows of 2017.

In summary, Asian dramas are a rising force, and they are fast moving into mainstream focus by viewers who demand compelling stories, strong casts, and high production values. We can expect to see more and better offerings. The future looks bright for Asian dramas and the fans!

Happy Viewing!
