Biography

Tita Merello was born on the 11th of October, 1904 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her first film role was in Tango!, the first Argentine film with diegetic audio. After making a series of films throughout the 1930s, she established herself as a dramatic actress in the 1937 film La fuga directed by Luis Saslavsky. In the mid-1940s she moved to Mexico where she starred in Cinco rostros de mujer, for which she won the Ariel Award. The height of her popularity came in the following decade, when she starred in films like Los Isleros, considered her best performance, Guacho, and Mercado de abasto.

In terms of musicianship, Tita Merello is most remembered for the songs Se dice de mí and La milonga y yo. Although she was never married nor had children, she did have a passionate affair with actor Luis Sandrini, from whom she separated in 1948. Merello’s last cinematic performance came in Las barras bravas which was released in 1985. The supervedette passed away on Christmas Eve of 2002 when she was 98.
