Since 2015, rumors have been swirling about the relationship between director Hong Sang Soo and his muse Kim Min Hee, with attempts made by both parties to quiet and dispel the gossip by stepping away from the spotlight. But with Hong's new film out, which happens to star his reported girlfriend, the critically-acclaimed director decided to put all the talk to rest by coming clean.

"We are in love with each other. The reason we said nothing to the press so far is because we felt there was no need to explain such a personal affair,” Hong said on Monday, at a press conference in Seoul to promote his newest release, On the Beach at Night Alone. The film, which won Kim Min Hee Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, is about a young actress who falls in love with her much older and married director. While filming, Hong was 56 and married and his star actress was 34. Parallels between the director's personal life and the plot of his film were brought up by journalists and reporters numerous times, with Hong denying that the similarities were intended, no matter how obvious they seemed.

But just today, the director finally admitted that he was indeed in love with Kim Min Hee, while still somewhat ridiculously denying that his film was autobiographical in any way, despite the story itself, his characters' personalities, and situations that seem to mirror those in his real life. "The reason I use such personal details is because they (personal details) help spark something in me, " said Hong. "They help me to be more truthful."

This most recent admission of a romance by Hong Sang Soo will no doubt add fuel to a fire that was almost out. Maybe his next movie can be about an older director who announces at a press conference that he is indeed in love with his much-younger muse, but who has to deal with the public after admitting to the affair while discussing his latest release — a movie about an older director falling in love with his much-younger actress. And the movie after that can be about . . .

Good luck to them both!

The admission came today, but it's been pretty obvious.

This movie is about . . . us!
