Nearly one million Chinese couples apply to have second child
Nearly a year ago, China relaxed its one-child-per-couple policy, and since that time almost one million couples have applied to have a second child. The updated policy works by letting couples have a second kid if one of the parents happens to be an only child. Some have been critical of China's relaxed one child policy because it limits the dating options for those who want two children.
The number of applications for a second child in two of China's major cities, Beijing and Shanghai, totaled 30,305 and 15,000 respectively.
While couples have been eager to push for a second kid, many are still concerned about the rising costs of being a parent, particularly in larger cities.
