Romantic K-dramas always have that special something that lifts us up when we are down, and gives us hope that our true love does exist in the world. After watching several thrilling dramas, you may come across a few unique shows with twists in the story-lines that shock you. Today, I have listed just a few fan-favorites that completely blew us away when they unexpectedly turned dark.

1. Boys Over Flowers

Geum Jan Di may have been swept up in a fairytale romance with the wealthy Goo Joon Pyo, but the series was shrouded in darkness. From extreme school bullying to being tortured by Jun Pyo's mom, Jan Di couldn't enjoy herself fully with so much negativity going on. Not to mention that horrific kidnapping incident from that male model who Jan Di met by chance.

2. Cheese in the Trap

There was already a creepy air about the mysterious Yoo Jung, and Hong Seol had to face evil head on with the scariest stalker on her college campus. Her stalker was so obsessed with her, he resorted to threats and violence. Did I mention he had a girlfriend too?

3. Dream High

Who didn't love this series when it first came out in 2011? Seeing the six students in the show go after their dreams was so empowering since each of them had a unique backstory. However, Yoon Baek Hee becoming a victim of sexual assault put a dark cloud over the somewhat upbeat series.

6. Heading to the Ground

This delightful series quickly shifted gears when Cha Bong Gun was taken to the mental hospital after losing his memory. It happened so early in the series that viewers were in a state of shock. To make matters worse, his little sister falls ill with a deadly disease later on.

5. Dream Knight

After a series of hope-filled episodes, Joo In Hyeong gets a shocking diagnosis that threatens her life, and her guardians are faced with their own difficult decision on whether to leave her or die themselves. The JYP soundtrack was the best, but the tough choices the stars had to make quickly turned the short series into a tearjerker. Not to mention, those idols/former guardians were creepy villains for a number of episodes.

Starring Song Ha Yoon and Jackson Wang

6. Touching You

Do Jin Woo's ability to see the future backfires when he meets a lovely lady who he falls head over heels for. Before their sweet romance even starts, he sees that she will be tragically murdered. He has to do everything in his power to stop it and find out who is trying to kill her.

7. Click Your Heart

For the most part, this short series was cheerful and an all around feel good series. However, one of Min Ah's love stories paired her up with the spirit of a student in a coma. It was all fun and games until she learned her new beau was actually knocking on death's doorstep.
