10 incredibly upbeat K-pop songs to chase away the winter blues
The last few weeks of winter always feels like it's never going to end. It can be hard to keep going and not get too down by the cold days, the short hours of sunlight and grey, gloomy weather. Don't worry, K-pop has a way of easing all troubles. We've carefully calibrated a list of our top 10 favorite upbeat K-pop songs from BTS and Red Velvet to Dynamic Duo to help you get through those last few weeks of winter. Turn the volume up, get dancing and make some sunshine of your own.
1. Dynamic Duo - Jam
Looking for a smooth and sophisticated song to jam to? This is your song! A mix of strings, synthesizer, funky bass and smooth rapping lends itself to some beautiful harmonies from these guys. Some of the lyrics including "We're feeling like we're on top" can't help but get you smiling and bopping your head. "Jam" is such an addictive song you'll find yourself going back to it again and again....and again. Not to mention the hilarious and creative video that no one should miss.
2. Day 6 - Freely Free
From Day 6's EP, "Freely" is a light and poppy tune that makes its way into a dance song. Although, it doesn't go full fledged into the electronic dance music scene sticking with a slightly more alternative/rock sound. It's a great song from an incredible band that will get almost anyone dancing along.
3. Seventeen - Mansae
Although I'm always slightly cautious of the music newer boy bands are going to produce, I've been amazed at the quality of Seventeen's music since their debut, both musically and visually. "Mansae" has the band's trademark funky beats and impressive rapping ad libs but goes even further into exploring all their talents and shows how diverse the band really is.
4. Red Velvet - Dumb Dumb
"Dumb Dumb" is one of those songs that starts off being fairly catchy but very quickly works itself into your head as an addictive and exciting song. Although sometimes the song feels a bit like it's gone off the rails Red Velvet commands it with confidence and ease despite the constant changes of direction. As busy as this song is, it's also very balanced. It's quite a masterpiece in songwriting and very fun to listen to.
5. Mamamoo and eSNa - Ahh Oop!
Want a straight up cheerful song? Listen to "Ahh Oop!". Even more fun- it's a great song to put on when you're riding in the car with your girlfriends heading out to a girls night out. With it's powerful and strong theme of female independence, it's definitely an anthem for girl power in the best way possible.
6. Big Bang - Sober
Although the lyrics and story of this song are not all that upbeat, the song itself has that anthem feel which is oh so fun to listen to. There is so much to unpack in both this video and song, showcasing the incredible talent of Big Bang and proving why they are so beloved by their fans and respected by peers.
7. Sleepy and Song Jieun - Cool Night
This duet featuring Secret's Ji Eun and Untouchables Sleepy is so smooth and relaxed it can't help but make you think of warm summer days and happy memories spent with someone you love. It's a great wind down song that is still cheerful and upbeat.
8. Miss A - Only You
The four ladies in Miss A have proven once again, their incredible talent, beauty and fun personalities with the track "Only You". Within 72 hours of its release in April 2015 it had garnered two million views proving that these girls are killing it in the K-pop girl band scene. The video is fun and the bright colors and beautiful faces certainly make it easy on the eyes.
9. Day 6 - Like The Sun
This list gets two Day 6 songs, proving that their whole EP is definitely worth a good listen to. This song is not only bright and catchy but also has that upbeat dance rhythm making it a song we want to dance to. This song culminates all their talents into a well packaged and very easy on the ears song. You can practically hear the smile on their faces when they are singing. I dare you not to smile while listening to this song- I don't think it's possible.
10. BTS - Dope
Like the title of the song, this song is straight up dope! (Was that too 90's for you?). BTS is one of my favorite bands in the K-pop scene. They always have a strong and hopeful message, saying that they won't let anything get them down. Their music is gritty and raw while still maintaining their upbeat and catchy sound. And their dance moves are insane to watch. I can watch their videos over and over again because it's sometimes hard to believe people can actually move like that.
