12 of the most touching K-drama singing scenes
We’ve already covered some of the saddest songs from K-drama soundtracks, but do you know what is even more emotionally walluping than a heart-wrenching song playing in the background of a scene? Someone breaking out of the foreground and singing those words to your face (and we aren't talking karaoke, because that deserves it's own list!) It probably isn’t surprising how popular K-drama shows about singing are, since so many of the actors and actresses on these shows are also idols, but what is surprising is how hard it was to narrow it down to 12 of the best singing scenes.
1. You’re Beautiful - Park Shin Hye - "Without Words"
This song may be called "Without Words," but by singing these words, Park Shin Hye’s character manages to get all three male leads to fall in love with her. That’s not too shabby for a former nun-in-training.
2. Boys Over Flowers - Kim Hyun Joong - "Because I'm Stupid"
If I saw Kim Hyun Joong singing this song on the street, I would give him all my money. Because I am stupid for him, and this song.
3. Boys over Flowers - Gu Hye Sun - "I Don't Know Anything But Love"
There are a lot of devious ways that evil mothers have tried to ruin the lives of their children’s prospective love interests in K-dramas. But this scene proves that challenging them to sing in front of an audience and their true love should not be one of them. Geum Jan Di does a metaphoric high kick to the heart with this song.
4 Heartstrings - Park Shin Hye - "I Will Forget You"
There could probably be a list completely dedicated to Park Shin Hye, and this is a favorite because of the poignancy of the song’s lyrics coupled with that one solitary tear (even her tear is all alone, you guys!) that rolls down her cheek just when the first male lead realizes he probably made a whopper of a mistake by letting her slip through his fingers (did he learn nothing from You’re Beautiful?). She may be singing that she will forget him, but you won’t forget this song so easily.
5. Heartstrings - Jung Yong Hwa - "Because I Miss You"
You could consider this Jung Yong Hwa’s response to #4 (and #1) above. And I would say this is the BEST RESPONSE EVER. Also, CNBlue needs to rename itself CNRedHot, because that is how I feel when I hear this song.
6. Mary Stayed Out All Night - Jang Geun Suk - "Hello, Hello"
This song is as adorable as the couple themselves in this show. Even though this isn’t the right song for that scene, it always makes me think of Moon Geun Young dancing with the cabbage. If you don’t know what this is a reference too, you know what you should probably binge watch this weekend now, right?
7. Dream High - Suzy - "Winter Child"
The titular song from Dream High could also easily be on this list, as well as so many, many others. I mean, it’s a show about singers, so it is bound to be hard to choose. But the sweetness of this song in this moment is too much. You will never find someone singing happy birthday more beautifully and touchingly.
8. Monstar - Ha Yeon Soo and Kang Ui Sik - "The Wind is Blowing"
This song is a guilty pleasure. Like this video has 1,741,405 views and 41,405 of them are probably mine, guilty pleasure. But what a duet. Way to stick it to the bully by using the power of song, Min Se Yi.
9 You're Beautiful - Jang Geun Suk - "What Should I Do"
I don't know what Jang Geun Suk should do, but you know what you should do? Listen to this song. Watch this series. Rinse. Repeat.
10. Shut Up! Flower Boy Band - Jaywalking - "Eye Candy"
If you like your songs a little less idol and a little more rock and roll, then let me introduce you to "Eye Candy." You won't be sorry.
11. Trot Lovers -Jung Eun Ji - "Hot Pepper"
Before there were Idols, there was Trot. Trot music was a wildly popular kind of Korean music (arguably the first K-pop) that began in the early 1900s. In Trot Lovers, Jung Eun Ji leads the nostalgia revival as a reluctant Idol trainee who only sings Trot. While she may be singing a song called "Hot Pepper" during her idol audition, this scene is all sweetness (and her little sister continues to steal the show for me). Trot may be a bit of an acquired taste, but this scene goes down deliciously easy.
12. Dream High - Kim Soo Hyun - Dreaming
Saving the best for last! Before he was from another star, Kim Soo Hyun was dreaming big in Dream High. This song is as much about the scene as the music, and that K-drama recipe will make you cry as much as the characters.
Okay, now remember this list does not include karaoke scenes because there are so many good ones that I think they deserve their own top 10. But with so many amazing songs to choose from, what else would you add to the list above?
