Over the past year, K-pop impressed with amazing group promotions. However, we also witnessed the rise of some amazing solo artists. Solo promotions give us the chance to see an idol's talent and personality on an individual level. This year many of our favorite K-pop stars were given a chance to shine and to honor their hard work, here are 12 idols who really stole the show with their solo debuts in 2016.


1.) Bobby (iKon)

In September of this year, Bobby made his solo debut with his single "꽐라 (HOLUP!)". This song was release in a four-track album entitled The Mobb, a collaboration project between Bobby and YG labelmate Mino under the name MOBB. You can watch the music video for "꽐라 (HOLUP!)" here.


2.) Eunji (Apink)

In April of 2016, on the eve of Apink's 5th anniversary, Eunji debuted as a solo artist with her six-track mini-album Dream. Eunji was heavily involved with the composition and lyrics in the mini-album, including the title song "Hopefully Sky". This song received to music show wins and placed no.1 on the Gaon charts before winning best ballad song at the Melon Music Award. You can watch the music video for "Hopefully Sky" here.


3.) Jessica Jung (Former Girl's Generation Member)

Following her departure from Girl's Generation, Jessica released her first solo album With Love, J in May of this year. This album not only topped eight music charts, but also placed first on the Hanteo Weekly Chart and Gaon Weekly Album Chart. Jessica was heavily involved in the production of With Love, J. She wrote and composed four out of the six tracks, including the title track "Fly", the music video for which surpassed 2 million views within 24 hours of it's release. 4.) Jimin (AOA)

In March of this year, Jimin debuted as a solo artist with her single "Call Me Bae" featuring EXO's Xiumin, as a part of her solo project #OOTD (Outfit of the Day). You can watching the endearing video for "Call Me Bae" here.



5.) Lay (EXO)

Lay's career as a solo singer began in October of this year with the release of "What U Need?".  This song placed #4 on not only the China V Chart, but also in Billboard's Digital Songs. Lay became the first Chinese artiist to appear on the top 60 of the US iTunes chart.

Soon after, he released the songs extended album Lose Control, along with the title track of the same name. "Lose Control" broke records in South Korea for the most sales by a solo artist, with over 200,000 pre-orders before release. It also placed #1 on Billboard's China V Chart for 6 weeks in a row.

6.) Luna (fx)

In May of this year, Luna began her solo career with the mini-album Free Somebody. This album has 6 funky tracks, including a title track of the same name.

7.) Mino (WINNER)

Mino's official start as a soloist began with "Body" in September of this year. This song was later featured his collaboration album The Mobb.

8.) Ryeowook (Super Junior)

Ryeowook's highly anticipated solo debut finally happened earlier this year. After 11 years , Ryeowook finally released The Little Prince, his first official solo album and Label SJ's (Super Juniors own label) first release. The Little Prince is named after a novel by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The title track of the same name is a conversation between between a heartbroken man and the protagonist of the novel, The Little Prince.

9.) Sandeul (B1A4)

Sandeul debuted with the gorgeous ballad "Stay As You Are" in October.  He also released an extended album of the same name.

10.) Suga (BTS)

Suga took the world by storm with as a soloist under the name AGUST D.  He released his solo album "AGUST D" and it's title track of the same name in August of this year.

11.) Tiffany (Girl's Generation)

During the summer of 2015, Tiffany began the "transition into the next chapter of [her] music career" by working on a solo album. Although she has been working in the composing process since 2014, she found it "nerve-wrecking to put out music [she’s] written on [her] own." However, she has said that Taeyeon has been a huge help throughout her preparation for the album.

In May of 2016, Tiffan became the second Girl's Generation member to have a solo debut with her album I Just Wanna Dance. Despite mixed reviews, her album was chosen as the seventh best K-pop album of the year by Billboard, along with debut no.3 on Billboard World Album chart and South Korea's Gaon Album Char?

12.) Fei (miss A)

In July of this year, Fei debuted with the seductive single "Fantasy"
