18-year-old Indian girl forced to marry a dog
I gotta warn you...this story is sad, but it could be worse. An 18-year-old girl in India has been forced to marry a dog, a stray one, so as to ward off an evil spell that's supposedly been cast on her.
Terrible, I know, but as crazy as this is gonna sound, things could be a lot worse for her. Women in so many parts of the world are treated in ways a lot of us can't even begin to fathom. Mangli Munda, from a rural village in Jharkhand, at least, at the very least, wasn't forced to marry some creep who would have done with her as he pleased.
There is some good news. According to the village elder, her spell gets transferred to her pooch husband, and she will be free to marry a human being. So this marriage is strictly to get rid of the spell; it's not permanent. Either way, 70 people attended the wedding and wished the newlywed couple happiness. Apparently, this village has married off women to dogs in the past as well.
As I sit here writing this article, it boggles my mind that something like this, and so much worse, still happens all over the world. Treating others as though they are beneath you, regardless of race, gender, economic status, or whatever else, is in my mind, unacceptable.
Let's hope this girl finds as much happiness as she possibly can. I'm sure her husband will, at times, at least make her feel loved. But I just can't make myself feel that this is okay. Obviously!
