6 Frenemy couples making fun waves in dramaland
The concept of "frenemies" usually applies to friends who turn into enemies over some ridiculous reason, like falling for the same love interest. However, there are other types of frenemies too. Let's take a look at six interesting frenemy couples who appear in recent dramas.
1. Oh My Venus
This frenemy relationship is definitely over a man, as Soo Jin (Yoo In Young) snatches away Joo Eun's (Shin Min Ah) boyfriend and also becomes her mean boss. The added indignity is that the new girlfriend has lost weight while the old girlfriend has gained weight over the years.
Although everything works out at the end because Joo Eun finds a better guy (So Ji Sub) and a healthier relationship, one can't help but feel that this kind of frenemy competition has frequently occurred in real life.
Huan Zheng (Alice Ke) and Sheng Nan (Joanna Tseng) take the frenemy competition up a notch. They had a misunderstanding over a college crush. From then on, they've competed in everything from clothes to career advancement. Sheng Nan even ruined Huan Zheng's wedding by getting all of her ex-boyfriends to make a scene. In revenge, Huan Zheng goes to work for the frenemy's company, intending on one-upping Sheng Nan. Can this fierce frenemy relationship ever be mended? What will it take? Their one-screen battles actually make for hilarious comedy.
In the meantime, Huan Zheng starts dating Sheng Nan's brother, played by romantic hottie Roy Chiu. Oh my, what hijinks will ensue?
Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eum) and Ha Ri (Go Joon Hee) are such close friends that they live in the same apartment and call each other "husband" and "wife" for fun. But that friendship can go poof when one of them decides that it is more important to fight for a man she has fallen for.
Although the frenemies eventually reconcile with tears and laughter, the drama gives a wonderfully touching portrayal of how the betrayal occurs and harms the precious friendship.
What if the frenemy is your own imaginary twin named Robin? Hyun Bin plays a man whose dual personalities compete for time and for the love of the same girl. Although they've worked out a way to share their schedule and the same bed, when it comes to a love relationship, one of them has to go!
Which one would you root for?
5. Twenty Again
It's really refreshing and enjoyable to watch No Ra (Choi Ji Woo) go to college to relive the time that she missed, had she not gotten pregnant in high school. However, she runs into Hyun Suk (Lee Sang Yoon) who had a crush on her during high school and has felt betrayed by her ever since she left school abruptly, even though she only thought of him as a friend. Fireworks spark and cannons fire as soon as they run into each other on campus, where he is now a professor and she is in his class.
The two ex-friends have to learn to trust each other to rekindle friendship and on to love. Here is a perfect case showing how frenemies could be a man and a woman who belong with each other.
Lee Hyun Woo and VIXX's Hongbin play two hot-blooded young men who are forced to attend a mysterious martial arts school. They already had their run-ins previously. Now, they even have to share the same dorm room.
This is a great setup for frenemies who may just bond as best pals. Will they gain friendship through fierce competition and battles? What if they both fall for the same girl?
How do you like the list? I focused on the recent frenemies as an update to this excellent list of other frenemies.
