This week welcomed the Year of the Sheep (or Goat or Ram). Regardless, it was the start a new Lunar Year and your newsfeed and TV commercials were probably flooded with "Gong Xi Fa Cai!" or "Gung Hai Fat Choi" and wishes for a Happy Lunar New Year. Major brands were ready to step on the bandwagon of this special holiday to release products to celebrate the new year. Check them out and see if your favorite brand made the list!

Some brands went with the sheep, some drew inspirations from rams and maybe a few used goats as motifs, one thing was consistent.. the colors. Red and Blue took over the packaging of these creative designs.

1. Godiva

As an indulger of chocolates, I was ecstatic to discover chocolatier Godiva's limited edition box of chocolates for the Lunar New Year (perfect timing for the week right after Valentine's Day). Their packaging features the goat, with a special series of ram-shaped chocolates flavored with traditional Chinese flowers and herbs, including jasmine, ginseng, chrysanthemum, and ginger:

2. Patron

San Francisco's basketball team, the Golden State Warriors, donned uniforms in honor of the Lunar New Year at last night's game against the San Antonio Spurs... and they were beautiful. While the uniforms aren't packaged goods, they are available for sale as fan merchandise:

BONUS: NBA

The National Basketball Association, a household name around the world, made a tribute to the to Lunar New Year in a very adorable commercial hat has been airing on TV (I saw it on ESPN). The NBA also has merchandise for sale, some products are featured in the commercial. The 30 second video features Jeremy Lin of the LA Lakers, the Chicago Bulls' Masct, James Harden of the Houston Rockets (Jeremy Lin's former teammate) and the Rockets' Mascot makes a cameo as well!

Congratulations Lunar New Year, you are finally mainstream. It's really great that famous brands in the U.S (and society) are partaking in a very special Asian holiday. Are there any packaging and designs you thought were really interesting/beautiful/fun? Or did any brands surprise you with product unveilings for the Lunar New Year?
