After Descendants of the Sun and Goblin’s success, what's next on her agenda? Here’s everything you need to know about screenwriter Kim Eun Sook’s next drama.

Kim Eun Sook will start writing her new drama after a short break. It looks like we can expect a historical drama to come out early next year. She’s been interested in the historical genre for a long time and learned how to write one through Goblin, according to Hwa and Dam Pictures, writer’s agency and Goblin’s production company.

The agency also shared that the writer gained confidence in shedding light on a traditionally Korean character through Goblin. Kim Eun Sook had wondered why the Korean media didn’t have its version of Twilight and of mythical characters like vampires and werewolves. She researched the Korean goblins and found that tall, handsome and attractive men were considered as goblins in the old times as opposed to short, ugly and scary, a misconception that was introduced during the Japanese colonial era. Kim Eun Sook started working on a draft of Goblin six years ago, and she almost wrote it in place of Secret Garden!

Screenwriter Kim Eun Sook has worked her way up, starting from Lovers in Paris in 2004 to Goblins, which became the most popular drama in the cable channel tvN’s history. (See a list of Kim Eun Sook’s dramas here.) However, she wasn’t a born star. When she graduated from college with a Korean literature degree, she was a struggling writer who made 700 bucks a month. Fast-forward a few decades and now she’s making 40,000 to 70,000 bucks per episode, which proves the popularity of her dramas.
