As Korea continues to prepare for the upcoming 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, Koreans are finding themselves debating a curious range of issues dealing with international hospitality. One such topic: Korean food names! While Korean cuisine has seen a recent rise in popularity all around the world, it seems Koreans can't help but wonder how to best present dishes to those who have yet to explore the wonderful world of Korean food.

As the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics approaches, Koreans are worried about the difficulty of Korean food names and how they should go about making it easier for foreigners to read and understand. Some possible solutions that have been proposed thus far include:

  1. Romanizing Korean dish names at restaurants so they are easier to read (i.e. 떡볶이 - Tteokbokki)
  2. Directly translating Korean dish names into what they are in English (i.e. 김밥 - Rice rolls with filling)
  3. Keeping the original dish names and romanizing them, but also including pictures for each dish for more clarification (i.e. 비빔밥 Bibimbap )

Which would you choose:

삼겹살 Samgyupsal Vs. Pork belly

김밥 Kimbap Vs. Rice rolls with filling

떡볶이 Tteokbokki Vs. Spicy rice cakes

비빔밥 Bibimbap Vs. Mixed rice with vegetables

Regardless of which solution is implemented for the 2018 Olympics...one thing remans for certain, no matter what you order it is sure to be delicious!
