Bae Yong Joon's KeyEast gets a huge investment from China's Sohu
South Korean artist management agency, KeyEast, has a new business partner in Chinese internet giant Sohu.com. How is this business news important to us? Just think about these three Superstars: Kim Soo Hyun, Kim Hyun Joong, and Bae Yong Joon!
On August 7, China's internet company Sohu.com announced that it is investing $15 million in KeyEast, to become its second largest partner. KeyEast founder and Korean superstar Bae Yong Joon will retain 29 percent of KeyEast while Sohu will hold 6 percent. The partnership gives KeyEast an entry to China's formidable market with the help of Sohu's strength and diversified resources, while Sohu will have preemptive right to KeyEast's productions and access to KeyEast's artists.
KeyEast was founded in 2006 by Bae Yong Joon, the Korean superstar who rose to fame with such romance dramas as Winter Sonata co-starring leading actress Choi Ji Woo, that enchanted countless viewers in many countries, and he is considered a leading iconic figure for the Hallyu wave. KeyEast represents a number of famous actors including Kim Soo Hyun (Dream High, My Love From Another Star) and Kim Hyun Joong (Playful Kiss, Inspiring Generation.)
There has been a rising interest among the young Chinese generation for Korean TV dramas and entertainment celebrities. Will the collaboration between KeyEast and Sohu result in more Korean dramas being shown in China? Will Korean stars appear more in Chinese dramas?
It will certainly be interesting to see the result from the new partnership especially for projects related to audience favorites Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Hyun Joong. Or, maybe Bae Yong Joon will return to the screen as he did in Dream High? Fans certainly wouldn't mind seeing more romance dramas starring any or all of these popular stars.
