China's youth have severe internet addiction problems. Here's a look at their intriguing solution.
Internet addiction has become more and more prevalent over the years because of all the ways we can now ingest it. In 2008, China declared internet addiction as a clinical disorder and created Internet Addiction Rehabilitation Treatment Centers, also known as “boot camps”, to set the afflicted on the right track.
Filmmakers Shosh Shlam and Hilla Midalia brought in cameras to document the inside of a center in Daxing.
It is a sad sight to see the ways some of these boys entered the rehab centers, but at the same time, it is also troubling to see the parents struggling with the consequences of putting their child into the treatment center. The treatment center located in Daxing says that there is a 70% success rate in curing the addiction. Judging by the video, it’s hard to imagine these kids transforming themselves, rather than succumbing to the fear of the center itself.
There are currently more than 400 internet addiction rehabilitation treatment centers around China.
