Choi Siwon's movie To the Fore chosen as Hong Kong's official Oscar submission
A cheer for Super Junior's Siwon! Hong Kong has picked the movie, To the Fore, to be its contender for the best foreign-language film category at the Oscars. It is an exciting news for director Dante Lam as well as the movie's strong cast including Korean star Choi Siwon of Super Junior fame. Find out more.
Only one foreign-language movie can represent its country of origin for the foreign-language film category at the Oscars. Even if a movie is not ultimately selected as one of the 5 final nominees, it is still an amazing honor to be entered into the nomination.
Hong Kong director Dante Lam's sports drama, To the Fore, is about the loves and lives of three young cyclists as they overcome fierce challenges. The leading cyclists are played by three heartthrobs: Eddie Peng from Taiwan, Shawn Dou from China, and Choi Siwon from Korea. It also stars Chinese actress Wang Luo Dan. The movie was filmed on location in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taiwan, Italy, Korea, and even the remote Tengger Desert of China.
To the Fore was chosen over other films including Wild City, Tale of Three Cities, and Two Thumbs Up, according the Hong Kong Film Producers' Association.
Director Dante Lam was reportedly very happy and excited about the first time that his movie is selected to represent Hong Kong for the Oscars. Eddie Peng said it is a great honor and expressed appreciation to the director for letting him experience a different kind of life. Siwon said he was finding it incredible and enjoyed participating in the movie.
To the Fore has grossed over US$23.6 million in China since its released in August.
The list of all eligible submissions to the foreign-film category will be announced in October 2015, and the final 5 nominees will be announced in January 2016. The 88th Academy Awards, aka Oscars, will be held on February 28, 2016.
Congratulations and best wishes to the director, the cast, and the production team.
