Controversial video uses pandas to teach people to be good tourists
A new ad campaign run by China's state-run broadcasting company is using pandas to teach people how to properly behave as tourists. We should definitely mention that the pandas are not real, although I kind of wish they were because it would awesome to see real pandas shop.
The clip shows a few pandas acting rude while they are on vacation in Sydney, Australia. The reckless pandas sleep on benches in public, spray graffiti, get in the way of people's photos, and throw trash wherever they feel like it.
Although the video might have been good natured, many netizens expressed their dismay with the clip as they believe the video perpetuates negative Asian stereotypes. One Weibo user commented:
“CCTV glorifies this ad, which insults all Chinese people, by calling it a public service announcement. Such ‘low-quality’ citizens are in the minority.”
