Doctor Crush Episode 17: Taken for Granted
This was a hard episode for us here at the Doctor Crush Drama Club. A few key moments that were a long time coming left us devastated, disappointed, and hoping for upturn of events come next week. The cute and upbeat Kang Soo, who has long kept a smile on his face even through the harsh treatment of his colleagues, takes on a role reversal as he becomes the patient this episode. Join DeShonda, June, and me as we talk about how this character who was taken for granted has now pulled on the heartstrings of his co-workers and fellow doctors.
Logan: Episode 17 was full of ups and downs. We went from letdowns to triumphs to letdowns again. Of course most of the episodes focused on Kang Soo’s brain tumor and I for one am not ashamed to admit that I cried for a good part of this episode. It simultaneously broke and warmed my heart to see how much the other doctors cared for him and how much it hurt them to find out he was in pain. Anyone else feel the same way?
June: I was a mess for this episode! I am so worried for Kang Soo and I hope everything is good for him from here on out. I hope that one co-worker stops yelling at him now! That was something that always bothered me. If there was one thing in this episode that I didn’t like was the stupid Director. He. Is. The. Absolute. WORST!!!!!!
DeShonda: This episode was heartbreaking for me as well. I was very emotional as I watched Kang Soo prepare himself for his surgery. I cried the hardest during the scene when he was cutting his hair. He is very brave and I am hoping that he will be alright. He is in good hands with Ji Hong performing his surgery. I was very happy that the other doctors rallied behind him when they found out he was ill. Knowing this, I believe the doctor that was very harsh on him will now be a bit more understanding. He seems very afraid of Kang Soo now. I think he feels a bit guilty for being so hard on him.
Logan: Agreed, I think that almost losing one of their own has really put into perspective for the doctors just how precious they are to one another. Ugh, that haircut scene, who knew that watching someone cut their hair could be so emotional? And when his little brother showed up, I lost any semblance of emotional control that I had. It was clear how much his brother looks up to him and the fact that he told him that he was cool even if he wasn’t a doctor was so touching.
June: Totally agree with you all. The moment his brother showed up, I was even more of a mess. I also got like flashbacks to when the actor who plays Kang Soo was in Descendents of the Sun. lol I was like his brother would be in the army.
DeShonda: That’s a good connection June! I was thinking the exact same thing. I love how close Kang Soo and his brother are very close. It’s good that he got the chance to come and support his brother. Everything has to go well in the next episode with Kang Soo or else I am going to be an emotional wreck.
Logan: I was honestly a little disappointed in Hye Jung that she chose not to be at the hospital for Kang Soo during his surgery and instead decided to go to lawyer after lawyer with-sorry- hopeless case. It didn’t hurt going to the lawyers, but could she have gone in a few days? It could have waited and in my opinion Kang Soo was more important. She knows how much she looks up to her and I would have liked to see her express a little more concern for him. I know she said she wasn’t worried because she knew he’d be okay, but still...
June: Honestly, I felt like she was hardly even in the episode and it felt weird for me. I also wish she was there for Kang Soo but I know she really wants something done about her Grandma’s case. Especially because what they did in her case was horrible! I feel like she might have been away too because of her suspension. :/
DeShonda: I completely agree with both of you. Hye Jung should have been there to support Kang Soo. But I can understand her wanting to find out about her Grandmother. I just hate that she went to different lawyers and no one was able to help her case. That was very heartbreaking to know that nothing can be done because of the statute of limitations. Had she done something a few years prior, then the outcome could have been better. But I have a feeling that something has to happen in her favor. I was also glad to see what happened during her Grandmother's surgery as well, but the Director needs some type of punishment.
Logan: This may be an unpopular opinion, but even though the Director is a complete arrogant jerk, I don’t think he’s as at fault as Hye Jung would like him to be. He didn’t try to kill Grandma. He did really want to save her and seemed to try really hard. If he had no knowledge of this new medical technique then yes, it was reckless. But honestly, it seemed like an honest mistake. It would just be nice if he issued a sincere apology, that’s the part that bothers me.
June: I can agree with that! I think what bothers me too is that he won’t sincerely apologize. I’m like it’s not hard! >:O
