Master? master1 Master?!?! master2 I'm still in shock over Master's knife skills outside of the kitchen and the apparent revelation that he is or was involved in some sort of gangster lifestyle. I know that all the signs have been there, but I constructed this elaborate fantasy that Master did have a dark and sad past--related to him serving as a heroic special ops soldier in the Korean military. As for the comic relief gangsters, I supposed that they were ex-Army buddies who had fallen into gangsterdom, and he was mentoring them so that they could rejoin the community as upstanding citizens. For some reason--possibly related to how delicious his cooking looks and how delicious he looks—I really want Master to be good. gangsters I wonder sometimes if the comic relief gangsters are former Cyrano theater actors hired by Master and Byung Hoon as part of the most elaborate Cyrano set-up to date, initiated before the events of episode one, and intended to pair Min Young with Master. I found the first episode of Cyrano so confusing with its multiple layers of deception that I wondered if we weren't missing one additional layer: that the whole plot for the series was set in motion by the need to rope Min Young into working for the Cyrano agency so she could fall in love with Master next door, who had presumably already seen and fallen for her at some point before. I know there must be holes in my theory, but I can't find a way to wrap my head around all the strange and unexplained bits of the Dating Agency: Cyrano world otherwise. Are we watching a story within a story right now? Is the Cyrano theater more than just a setting, but also a metaphor for the attempted staging of Min Young and Master's relationship? If I'm off in my own imaginary world again please tell me so in the comments! And yet...Master looked so comfortable with that knife. Speaking of knives, I was pretty surprised by the blurring of the knife when Master held it against the gangster's neck. After a little googling I found that Korean network television requires the blurring of knives in general--even when they're used on cooking shows. Cable tv shows unpixelated knives in more situations, but they do tend to be blurred when near or making contact with skin. chem Before I let my fellow clubbers give their thoughts on this week's episodes, can we talk about the chemistry between Min Young and Byung Hoon? I thought that Sooyoung, the actress who plays Min Young, nailed the look of a person feeling the sudden lightning bolt of attraction; her expression seemed to show a nicely understated mix of confusion and surprise. My favorite moment was when Byung Hoon played rock, paper, scissors with Min Young while she rescued him in the water--I couldn't determine if this was some sort of dream or if he actually did it and then promptly went unconscious, requiring CPR when Min Young dragged him onto the dock. What actually happened in that scene? scissors I’ll return to wrap things up on Saturday, but before I swim away to come up with more wild Dating Agency: Cyrano theories I want to let you know about a k-drama night giveaway that I'm co-sponsoring with Dramafever on my main blog.
