DRAMA CLUB: Good Doctor Episodes 11-12 (1/4)
Welcome back to another week of Good Doctor. Episodes 11 and 12 were full of romantic bits and perhaps my drama partners Lore and Shai will elaborate on it more in their reviews, but this week, I'm particularly interested in the I-won't-tell-you theme of secrecy.
The characters in Good Doctor seem to harbor secrets and I hope to get to the bottom of it.
Resident doctor Park Shi On (Joo Won) can't seem to make a proper confession to his colleague Cha Yoon Seo (Moon Chae Won). Shi On even develops lying skills when he can't answer Chae Won's questions directly as to why he is wearing a suit late at night and in another situation, why he is accompanying her out of the hospital. It's not that Shi On won't confess to Yoon Seo, but he can't confess to Yoon Seo due to nervousness. Later on, in an angry moment, Shi On lets his feelings out, stunning Yoon Seo. I'm glad he did it before Yoon Seo catches on and asks him about it.
Dr. Kim Do Han (Joo Sang Wook) finally understands Assistant Director Kang Hyun Tae (Kwak Do Won)'s intention to take over the hospital, turning it into a for-profit hospital centered around pediatric surgery. Assistant Director Kang makes a light apology, but Do Han does not accept it and tells Assistant Director Kang to leave. Assistant Director Kang tells bits and pieces of his story at a time and there's more to be revealed about a mystery person who is in the U.S. in need of a doctor.
I feel bad for our patient Lee Soo Jin who cut ties with her in-laws just so she can save her unborn child. Before surgery, she requests that if the surgery takes a turn for the worse, the doctors should save her baby instead. The sunbae doctor fibs in order to give Soo Jin hope. However, at the pre-surgery meeting for Soo Jin, her projections weren't so hopeful. It's hard to tell patients the scary truth.
It is a mystery why Do Han is vigorously training Shi On to become a better surgeon than Do Han. He asks Shi On to memorize and understand all the prior surgeries the pediatric department encountered, quizzes Shi On, and pushes Shi On to face his panic attack in the operating room. Do Han appears to be helpful, but I think he's up to something.
Furthermore, I wonder what Do Han's intentions are with Yoon Seo. After taking a break from his relationship with his fiance, Yoo Chae Kyung (Kim Min Seo), Do Han seems to be courting Yoon Seo immediately afterwards, spending his birthday with Yoon Seo, driving Yoon Seo home, taking Yoon Seo shopping, and petting Yoon Seo lovingly on the head. Realistically, I think the change is too soon.
Do Han loved Yoo Kyung enough to propose to her so how come he had a change of heart so soon? Yoo Kyung wants to take over the hospital, but I don't think that's enough reason for Do Han to break relations with her so bluntly and quickly. Chae Kyung said that they should have felt upset that they are taking time apart, but both of them aren't in too much in pain about it. It's so hard to believe that Do Han wanted to marry Chae Kyung. They both had a romantic period once, but their feelings fizzled for each other before they even knew it. If they communicated and tried harder, they could save their relationship.
Dr. Han Jin Wook (Kim Young Kwang) had the shock of his life when he saw his crush, Na In Young (Eom Hyeon Kyeong) working in a bar as a hostess. In Young has another secret on top of having a shady job. I speculate that she is going to donate an organ to her sister Na In Hae (Kim Hyun Soo) even though there are major risks in doing so. Now, Jin Wook understands why In Young didn't want to date him, but I don't think his many years of feelings for In Young changed one bit, unlike Kim Do Han's feelings for Yoo Chae Kyung.
After Yoon Seo tells Do Han a little bit about Shi On's abusive history with his father, Do Han asks Yoon Seo how she got that information. Yoon Seo freezes up and then lies, telling Do Han that she heard the story from the Director Choi (Chun Ho Jin). Yoon Seo is protecting the identity of Shi On's mother so she is forced to tell a lie. How long can she keep this a secret?
Shi On's mother, Oh Kyung Joo (Yun Yu Seon) will not reveal her identity until Shi On recognizes her. Sadly, there is no progress with the mother-son pair and Shi On seems to recognize his father at lightning speed instead, causing Shi On to collapse. It looks like Shi On's father will be after Shi On's money.
After another fun week of episodes, I look forward to more confessions and heartbreaks from the cast of Good Doctor. New episodes of Good Doctor are available on Dramafever every Tuesday and Wednesday. In the meantime, I'll partake in some "unique" hobbies to pass the time. It is currently New York Fashion Week.
