Monstar has filled our lives for the last 11 weeks—now that we are on the brink of an ending, the topic we decided to share for this post is "My favorite character and why”. I am not sure about you, but it always fascinates me to see why people like/love/adore/worship (too far?) the characters they do in a show. Let’s see if your thoughts will follow along with ours… R11-1 First to Bat Lore Unnie: A big part of the reason why Monstar sucked me in is the characters—the band of misfits and the way they grew bit by bit as individuals, made for some great drama watching. So when the drama club decided it was high time to identify our favorite characters my brain exploded. Favorite character?! That is like picking which one of my puppies I like best! But alas, I did some soul searching and realized there is one character I have loved above all others. And man can she play a bass! R11-20 Na Na started off in the background—silent and kind of scary. A character that had a whirlwind of rumors surrounding her; it was easy not to pay this character a ton of attention in the earlier episodes. After all, our only information about her was that she was a gangster fighting bad girl that smoked. Slowly but surely as the show progressed, so did our insight into who this girl was, which made me fall in love with this character. R11-2 With each piece of information that was revealed I found myself cheering this character on more and more. When we found out she could sing, and by sing I mean SING, I felt like I had discounted her too early—I had never really seen the real girl! When we found out why those guys were always pushing her in a car, I felt like I had never taken the time to consider why all of this was happening to her. And when we finally were shown that she was a girl with a crush and a dream of fashion I just wanted to give her a big hug and eat ice cream with her (though I kind of think at this suggestion she would have told me to get lost). R11-3 As we approach the finale Na Na has said her peace, told Sun Woo to stop being an idiot, and showed us her real self. I hope that she gets her happy ending with Sun Woo but even if she does not I think she will be okay—because another reason why I love Na Na is because she is a strong person. Girl, I will miss you. R11-4 Second Batter Cypsis: My favorite character definitely is Seol Chan; he is exactly the type of male character I tend to fall in love with. He can be hot or cold depending on the person he is dealing with. We all have people that we like or dislike for some reasons. R11-19 Seol Chan is “fan-neutral”—friendly, bitchy, but not faking any of it. I think that is the main reason why I like him much more than mister all-the-same Seon Woo whose emotions cannot be read that easily. R11-12 He gets love struck and does not know how to express his feelings properly. Seeing a man in love anguish is something that makes me fall for them—spending so much time by Se Yi house just because his heart does not let him stay at home.... I wonder how many times he has been there already… R11-17 Next point is that after realizing his true feelings he decides to fight for his love. I don’t like losers who give up on love – maybe because I have done it myself? We have seen Seol Chan’s unexpected actions – putting Se Yi into tight spots, getting jealous, and of course the highlighted kiss-scene. R11-13 Seol Chan’s imagination is something that only few characters I have seen can compete with. Maybe due to the fact that we have been able to witness Seol Chan’s development throughout the drama has made him really precious to me. R11-14 Another reason why I like Seol Chan is that he is a professional and he does not forget his position. He knows that he cannot do everything by himself and there are things that he must coordinate with his agency. Besides, even when his mind is on Se Yi, he does his work first—nothing is better than a guy who knows his priorities and responsibilities. R11-15 The outcome of liking Seol Chan is that Yong Joon Hyung made me into BEAST fan. Even though I knew BEAST before and heard some of their songs, I did not really pay much attention to them. Anyway, at this moment: I know each member’s name, remember a bit of their backgrounds and songs, and I am slowly starting to distinguish their voices. R11-18 In addition, my sister bought a German teenage magazine for 3 euros (about 4 dollars) only to get BEAST's poster which was between it. I do not know how it is in States, but in my country it is not the cheapest poster. So in the end, my two sisters and I were affected by this fever – I do not know about my last sister, but I am sure that after seeing MONSTAR she will like Seol Chan as much as I do. R11-16 Last Batter E-Kun: It breaks my heart (I feels you Regina Spektor) that I will not be writing my post about Kang Ha Neul as Sun Woo—I feel wronged, but the post is about our favorite characters (here’s a cookie for my fellow lovers…). R11-5 A rare anomaly has indeed occurred… I love the two main characters at the same time in the same show! I watch tons and tons and tons (and still more) dramas; it is rare that I have the opportunity to love both the leading lady and beau. Since Cypsis talked about Seol Chan, I will rant and rave on why I love Se Yi. R11-6 Min Se Yi impressed me when we first met her in the classroom at the end of episode one. I was not keen on her running away from home (which was in another country), but her melancholic disposition and fiery attitude reminds me a lot of myself. Her bravery against miserable Jae Rok made me say, “Oh—Unnie likes you!” The 2 reasons I like Se Yi is: She is a “mess in progress” and she is honest. R11-7 I call Se Yi a mess in progress because even though we are not a reflection of each other; I feel like I am looking at my younger self when I see the way she reacts to things around her and her friends. Always seeking the goodness in a person’s character, not afraid to stand up to injustice, and confused how to express her feelings to the people she is closest to (or want to become closer with). Even though she has not completely found her way (nor I for that matter), she is a character we can trust to do the right things. She worked things out with her mother, she owned up to her feelings for Seol Chan, and she strives to be a bomb (good) friend. R11-8 Se Yi is called brave, fearless, and strong willed—these are all wonderful adjectives to describe her character, but what I like most is her honesty. Even though she can have a horrible habit of deluding herself when it comes to her own feelings, she is always honest when it comes to the important things in life. In a world that lying and “sugar coating” (saying things in a gentle way to mask a horrible truth) is second nature, it was refreshing to see a character who was pretty much a straight shooter. Her shining moment is when she tells Sun Woo at the end of episode 11 that she likes Seol Chan—harsh, but a truth that needed to be spoken and I respected her for not beating around the bush to say it. It was a respectful beautiful rejection to a person she considers a friend. R11-9 Even though I did not agree with every single action Se Yi executed, I understand why she did what she did and felt the way she did. My hope is that she will be added to my top 5 list of women that I like in a drama (I only have 3 out of the 200+ dramas I have seen over the years). R11-10 The development of these characters have made for an enjoyable, emotional, and nostalgic (for some) ride for us. Here's to hoping (cracking coconuts) that the end will be something we all can walk away from feeling like we didn't waste 12 hours of our lives (more hours for Lore, Cypsis, and I). One more post and we are out! Stay tuned… R11-21   More MONSTAR Drama Club!
