Thank you show for going out on a high note. In fact, I think I love Monstar more now that I have watched the finale. I may not hold a majority opinion; I have read quite a few reviews on the last episode that were far from positive. These critiques of the show cited a bonanza of resolution, too fast and furious, as the main reason for their discontent. Last episode I would have agreed with this opinion, but for some reason this episode felt more natural and less forced in the loose end wrap-up department. The finale was quirky and funny mixed with serious, which is hard to pull off without coming off as unevenly paced and fake. Yet I feel like it did just that-made me laugh and made me cry with equal fervor but never left me shaking my head. I am definitely not disappointed, just sad to see this drama end. 12 7 The last entry of Monstar found Color Bar appearing on the program Goddess’ Kiss, competing against their nemesis All for One. With several hurdles to face, our band of misfits went into overdrive to prepare. All of which brings me to a moment that made me smile and giggle until my face hurt: Eun Ha’s new found interest in social justice. 12 6 Eun Ha’s newly discovered passion is all thanks to Goddess’ Kiss for basically forcing Seol Chan to write a song in one day. Hey, what can I say, a girl is loyal to her Oppa. I feel an Elle Woods is in the making. 12 5 Seol Chan brought Se Yi home to meet Mom. Se Yi showed her sweet side to dear old Mom and helped bring her closer to her son. I loved this sequence of events; after watching their reconciliation it felt like Seol Chan finally felt unburdened (which I think played out later when he comforted Se Yi over her feelings of guilt). 12 4 I loved Mom lurking by the door because she heard, um…read somewhere you should not let your son be alone with his girlfriend. Ha. Sweet memories of my grandmother warning my Mom the first time my boyfriend (now husband) came over to visit- I had to crack open the door too. 12 2 Na Na and Sun Woo’s final push and pull…okay maybe mostly push…gave us Na Na calling Mr. Perfect a jerk. Na Na, I felt that way too. Seriously Sun Woo…you need to stop being so mean! I understand Sun Woo’s pain at losing Se Yi, but that is still no excuse for playing a song to rip Na Na’s heart out. 12 3 So I hardly felt happy when Sun Woo tried the jacket on at the end and remarked that he did not think it would fit, hinting that he had changed his outlook. I want Na Na to be happy and all, don’t get me wrong. Yet I feel like Sun Woo comes off as insensitive in this episode. Maybe in the future these characters will finally find each other and stop their game of I-like-you-but-you-hate-me, but as for the finale I am rooting for Na Na to quit her crush completely. 12 1 The last shot, of Seol Chan wiping away Se Yi’s tears, was something I found very fitting. Love, as our final voice over tells us, can be nostalgic but always drives us forwards. Without love, be it new love or old love, we would be alone in the sea of hard truths. With love our characters were able to unite and find unexpected purpose- be it the misfits and their band, the teacher and her underdogs, or the parents and their resolution with the past-- relationships are the building blocks of our lives. I liked this ending message, because it focused on the emotions that a person finds comfort or pain in and did not make this story completely tied to each character’s final outcome. Monstar was a story about people, not a story about a person. 12 8 So, in conclusion, I will miss you Monstar. Sometimes you did things wrong but a lot of times you did things right. Here's to the show, Cheers! More MONSTAR Drama Club!
