Kim Jong Kook and Song Ji Hyo were let go from Running Man, which they had been a part of for seven years. Running Man asked Kim Jong Kook to leave on Monday, and Song Ji Hyo learned about her leave only when the news came out on Wednesday.

According to an insider, “[The Running Man cast members] first heard about format changes two weeks ago. The co-producer visited the set last week and mentioned it again. There was no mention of cast member changes. In the meanwhile, they let Kim Jong Kook go in person on Dec. 12. Song Ji Hyo found out about her leave through the news today. The ratings were going down, and they knew they had to change the format. But this kind of farewell hurts not only the crews but also the stars.”

Kim Jong Kook and Song Ji Hyo were heartbroken at the one-sided notice, such a devastating farewell after building trust for seven years, the insider added.

Comedian and MC Kang Ho Dong, who was in talks to join Running Man, decided against it after the news about how the two cast members were let go.

Today, the Running Man production team issued an official apology. The team stated, “We’ve been working to launch season 2 in January 2017. In the process, the unexpected news of Kim Jong Kook and Song Ji Hyo leaving the show came out before we could wrap up the conversation with them and we hurt them, with whom we spent seven years like family. We sincerely apologize to both. We also apologize to the Running Man fans. We apologize to Kim Jong Kook and Song Ji Hyo again for lack of consideration and thoughtfulness. We apologize to the other Running Man members, who must be confused by the news.”
