Beautiful Chinese actress Fan Bingbing of Empress of China fame is now a mermaid in the clutch of the French Sun King. Pierce Brosnan plays Louis XIV, who wants the secret of immortality from her. Based on an award-winning novel, the movie was originally to be released in April, but it has been postponed. Until then, find out more about the story and take a look at the posters and photos from the movie.

The captivating tale is based on the 1997 fantasy sci-fi novel, The Moon and the Sun, written by Vonda N. McIntyre. The book won the 1997 Nebula Award for best novel, beating A Game of Thrones written by George R. R. Martin. As the author extensively researched and based the setting in the Sun King's court at the Palace of Versailles, the movie is shot on location at Versailles as well as in Australia.

In the story, the King wants to steal the life force from the mermaid, in the belief that he will get the secret of immortality. Marie-Josèphe, a young court lady and also the King's daughter by a mistress, realized the mermaid is an intelligent being and decides to help free her. Pierce "James Bond" Brosnan plays King Louis XIV, also know as the Sung King, and Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) plays Marie-Josèphe.

Since the period drama is set in the time of the Sun King during the 17th century, considered the peak of the French culture, the production is full of lavish surroundings and fabulous costumes.

Casting Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing is really a stroke of genius. It not only gives the movie a beautiful mermaid, but it also attracts funding from Chinese investors to invest in the movie that is budgeted at $42 million. Additionally, it guarantees attention from the country that has a an immense cinema market.

Other big-name actors in the cast include the following: Academy Award winner William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Ron Howard (In the Heart of the Sea), Ben Lloyd-Hughes (Divergent), and Pablo Schreiber (The Wire, Orange is the New Black).

Just from reading about the plot and the cast, I know I'll be very interested in watching this movie. I'd like to read The Moon and the Sun book before watching the movie. Having grown up reading a lot of science fiction and martial arts romance tales, this book sounds simply tempting.
