These literal translations of country names in Chinese are almost better than the originals
A Mandarin school's website called "Live the Language" created a few maps of Europe and the United States that show the literal translation of characters used phonetically in Chinese. As you might have guessed, some of the translations are pretty funny and some also make an awful lot of of sense.
Some of my favorite translations are Belarus translated into "White Russia," Italy translated to "Meaning Big Profit," the state of Arizona translated to "Inferior Profit Sauna" (hard to argue with that), and New York translated to "To Restrict Buttons." In college I took a conversational Chinese class where we learned the absolute barebones of the language and I borderline failed. So I have tons of respect for anyone who can master the language. I only wish we could actually start using some of these translations in real life.
